When the Lakers shockingly acquired Luka Doncic<\/a> a year ago, fans knew the purple and gold had secured their next face of the franchise. But as the team operates on two timelines this season, it seems LeBron James<\/a>\u2019 Hollywood ending could come sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n

In his Bleacher Report livestream Monday afternoon<\/a>, NBA insider Jake Fischer discussed the Lakers\u2019 lack of aggression ahead of the trade deadline and the team\u2019s desire for cap flexibility this summer. He then delivered the harsh yet expected reality regarding LA\u2019s relationship with LeBron:<\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitively, the Lakers are ready to move on from LeBron James and I think LeBron James is ready to move on from the Lakers as well. That\u2019s kind of the foregone sentiment in Los Angeles right now about what\u2019s to come this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 22-time All-Star is in his eighth season in LA, marking his longest single stint with a franchise. And although he has etched his name into Laker lore and further cemented a legendary career<\/a>, it\u2019s abundantly clear that this partnership has run its course.<\/p>\n

With the Lakers potentially standing pat this year\u2014despite having over $40 million in expiring contracts<\/a> on the table\u2014it\u2019s yet another example of the front office\u2019s mismanagement in the LeBron era, and a glaring factor behind why both sides have gotten to this point. With mere days before the Feb. 5 deadline, the Lakers remain a borderline bottom-five defensive team<\/a> while continuing to struggle with bench scoring<\/a>\u2014areas that could\u2019ve been addressed by now with one or two meaningful moves.<\/p>\n

Such inactivity has led fans to vehemently air their grievances<\/a> about Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss, proving that the weather isn\u2019t the only thing heating up in LA.<\/p>\n

If Rob Pelinka stands pat again at the deadline, Mark Walter should seriously consider hiring a more competent general manager after the season and remove Jeanie Buss from having say over roster decisions.<\/p>\n

Lakers\u2019 Summer Plans<\/p>\n

With the Lakers\u2019 focus apparently growing toward the future instead of the present, Fischer said the team hopes to retain Austin Reaves<\/a> (to the surprise of no one) while surrounding him and Doncic with \u201cupside young pieces.\u201d And while he didn\u2019t explicitly connect the following names to the Lakers, Fischer mentioned three standout wings who will enter restricted free agency: Peyton Watson<\/a> (Denver Nuggets), Tari Eason<\/a> (Houston Rockets) and Bennedict Mathurin<\/a> (Indiana Pacers).<\/p>\n

The two West forwards have become rising talents on rival contenders, with Watson stepping up amid injuries<\/a> and Eason putting himself in contention for Sixth Man of the Year<\/a>. Mathurin, meanwhile, is boasting a career-high 17.5 points per game despite the Pacers having a down year sans Tyrese Haliburton<\/a>. Any of them would be adequate 3-and-D targets for the Lakers, provided the front office is willing to use the projected cap space<\/a> to its fullest potential.<\/p>\n
