{"id":587368,"date":"2026-02-07T01:32:31","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T01:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/587368\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T01:32:31","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T01:32:31","slug":"celtics-latest-addition-marks-a-reunion-between-two-old-friends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/587368\/","title":{"rendered":"Celtics latest addition marks a reunion between two old friends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">BOSTON \u2014 Amid all the chao of Thursday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/nba-trade-rumors\/130930\/celtics-roster-nba-trade-deadline-trades-draft-picks-contracts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA midseason tradeline<\/a> deadline, the Celtics traded for two-way player John Tonje.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Tonje, who was drafted by the Utah Jazz 53rd overall in June, was in the middle of standout season with the Salt Lake City stars when he learned he was traded. He ultimately landed in Boston as part of the trade that sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/articles\/131457\/report-celtics-move-on-from-chris-boucher-agree-to-trade-with-jazz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Boucher<\/a> to the Jazz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">For Tonje, the Celtics mark a new opportunity, but also a reunion of sorts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The 24-year-old doesn\u2019t know a ton of people in Boston, but he does know one: Celtics guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/2025\/4\/17\/24402671\/baylor-scheierman-boston-celtics-mom-creighton-nba-draft\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baylor Scheierman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Tonje and Scheierman were AAU teammates in high school, years ago at the Omaha Sports Academy. That club no longer exists, but its legacy lives on: for the first time, the Celtics have two players from Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">When Scheierman found out that Tonje was coming to Boston, he immediately texted him to congratulate. The two reunited on Friday morning at the Auerbach Center, as Tonje got his first time of the new organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cWe kept in touch a little bit throughout college \u2014 not like a whole lot,\u201d Scheierman said. \u201cBut, so it\u2019s cool to have someone from Nebraska, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Plenty of people from Omaha were excited to see Tonje and Scheierman reunite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cI had a bunch of people from back home blowing up my phone,\u201d Scheierman said. \u201cAll my old AAU teammates. It\u2019s cool that he\u2019s that he\u2019s here with us. He\u2019s a talented player.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Tonje appeared in 32 games for the Salt Lake City Stars this season, averaging 18 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. That came on the heels of a big-time NCAA Tournament run with Wisconsin Badgers, in which he averaged 19.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Before Wisconsin, he spent four seasons at Colorado State, and one year in Missouri.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But, before all of that, Tonje was another very talented Nebraskan basketball player, just like Scheierman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cHe can score in a variety of ways,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s a good defender. I think those are the two biggest things that stood out to me back in those days.
