The San Antonio Spurs<\/a> clearly have their foundational building block, Victor Wembanyama.<\/p>\n

Their task as they prove how good they are is to ensure he’s surrounded by the best pieces to make him, and the entire team, successful.<\/p>\n

It’s not clear that Jeremy Sochan fits that bill anymore.<\/p>\n

The Athletic’s John Hollinger<\/a> wrote that Sochan is a buyout candidate now that the NBA trade deadline has come and gone.<\/p>\n

“He can\u2019t shoot and struggles as a backup five, and we\u2019ve definitely determined he\u2019s not a point guard, which is why he can\u2019t get any run in San Antonio,” Hollinger wrote. “He needs to go back to a more developmental situation and figure out where his game fits.”<\/p>\n

Sochan was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Baylor.<\/p>\n

He’s still just 22 years old, but this season he’s averaging only 4.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.<\/p>\n

Sochan is shooting just 25.7% from 3-point range and 68.8% from the foul line.<\/p>\n

Without a shooting stroke and without a clear-cut position, Sochan doesn’t have a way to fill a straightforward role on a contender.<\/p>\n

As Hollinger writes, he could use a reset button to see what his NBA career is meant to look like.<\/p>\n

That doesn’t seem all that likely to happen in San Antonio at this point.<\/p>\n
