{"id":597030,"date":"2026-02-11T16:43:19","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T16:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/597030\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T16:43:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T16:43:19","slug":"steph-curry-movie-goat-screened-at-oaklands-grand-lake-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/597030\/","title":{"rendered":"Steph Curry movie &#8220;Goat&#8221; screened at Oakland&#8217;s Grand Lake Theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OAKLAND \u2013 The pitter-patter of rain outside of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2025\/04\/01\/freaky-tales-oakland-love-song\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oakland\u2019s Grand Lake Theater<\/a> melded with sharp cracks of bursting popcorn inside the venerable establishment, creating a soundtrack to the anticipation felt by attendees late on Tuesday afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A crowd \u2013 to the chagrin of security \u2013 clogged the cramped interior while hoping to catch a glimpse of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2026\/02\/09\/injury-update-steph-curry-runners-knee-jimmy-butler-acl\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a superstar actor<\/a> who was slated to make an appearance for the screening of a movie he produced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After almost an hour and a half, the man of the hour appeared with his family. No, it was not Michael B. Jordan or Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet walking through those doors and into a wall of flashing cameras.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was none other than Warriors superstar Steph Curry, who chose his adopted hometown as the place to give the invitees a glimpse into what could be his future career during a screening of \u201cGoat\u201d, an animated movie he both produced and starred in as a voice actor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our home, and this is a place that when I got started, I was starting my true underdog journey in the NBA,\u201d Curry said on the red carpet. \u201cSeventeen years later, we\u2019ve moved across the bridge, but we still want to plant our flag here and have Oakland represented on the national stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Ayesha Curry, second from left, and Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry, right, along with their children, pose for a family group photo on the red carpet for the screening of &quot;GOAT&quot; at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, Calif., on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026. (Ray Chavez\/Bay Area News Group)<\/p>\n<p>Could Curry, who voices the character of Lenny the giraffe, eventually become a major force in the film industry? Stand-up comic turned director-producer W. Kamau Bell said he would not count it out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if he wants the pay cut, but I think he is a natural born entertainer,\u201d Bell said. \u201cYou can\u2019t play the way he plays, with the joy he plays with and fierceness he plays with, without knowing how to act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NBA has had more than a few stars try their hands at gracing the silver screen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The performances range from memorable (\u201cMichael Jordan in Space Jam\u201d) to bad (anyone remember Kevin Durant\u2019s \u201cThunderstruck\u201d?) to bizarre (Shaquille O\u2019Neal in \u201cKazaam\u201d). As a voice actor, Steph Curry impressed the crew in his first major role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo use Steph\u2019s words, he\u2019s incredibly coachable,\u201d co-director Tyree Dillihay said. \u201cHe submitted to the process, came in with great humility, and let us do things on the vocal performance side he didn\u2019t himself know he could do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curry, 37, has also co-directed \u201cThe Baddest Speechwriter of All,\u201d a documentary that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/47757418\/stephen-curry-golden-state-warriors-sundance-film-festival-baddest-speechwriter-all\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won an award at the prestigious Sundance film festival in January<\/a>. But Curry admitted that filmmaking and acting are two very different skill sets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He made sure to note that, as a world-famous basketball player, he has enjoyed opportunities that others have had to dedicate their entire lives to hope for. (Ray Chavez\/Bay Area News Group)<\/p>\n<p>He recalled sports movies like \u2018The Sandlot\u201d and \u201cLittle Giants\u201d as movies that inspired him in his youth, and hoped that \u201cGoat\u201d and his other film projects can bring a similar level of enjoyment to kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the room was full of movie-makers, there were many reminders that Curry remains an elite basketball player first, and film expert second.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Warriors assistant coaches Ron Adams and Seth Cooper milled around the room lobby before making their way to the theater seats for a showing, and sports reporters outnumbered the film critics on the red carpet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For now, Curry remains focused on leading the Warriors into the playoffs when he returns to the court after the All-Star break, but also does not see \u201cGoat\u201d as his last film project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to do that while I\u2019m playing, obviously, but if the project makes sense and it\u2019s something I\u2019ve worked for, why not?\u201d Curry said. \u201cWe already have a full-time actor in the house in (my wife) Ayesha, so she might be my coach down the road.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry is interviewed on the red carpet for the screening of &quot;GOAT&quot; at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, Calif., on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026.
