{"id":600379,"date":"2026-02-13T06:42:22","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T06:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/600379\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T06:42:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T06:42:22","slug":"nba-fines-utah-jazz-indiana-pacers-for-conduct-detrimental-to-the-league","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/600379\/","title":{"rendered":"NBA Fines Utah Jazz &#038; Indiana Pacers For &#8220;Conduct Detrimental To The League&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOn the eve of its glitzy All-Star Game, an event that itself has been criticized for a lack of competitiveness, the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/nba\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nba\" data-tag=\"nba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA<\/a> has fined two franchises for \u201cthe management of their rosters during recent games.\u201d In the vernacular, they were tanking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTanking is the term for teams that don\u2019t expect to be competitive during a given season and so set out to lose intentionally in order to better their chances in the following year\u2019s draft. (Draft lottery chances increase as a team\u2019s place in the standings declines.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/utah-jazz\/\" id=\"auto-tag_utah-jazz\" data-tag=\"utah-jazz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Utah Jazz<\/a> (18-38) were fined $500,000 \u201cfor conduct detrimental to the league\u201d related to games against the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat on February 7 and 9, respectively. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cDuring those games,\u201d reads a statement from the league, \u201cthe Jazz removed two of the team\u2019s top players, Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson, Jr., before the beginning of the fourth quarter and did not return them to the game, even though these players were otherwise able to continue to play and the outcomes of the games were thereafter in doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAs the league said today, \u201cOvert behavior like this that prioritizes draft position over winning undermines the foundation of NBA competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/indiana-pacers\/\" id=\"auto-tag_indiana-pacers\" data-tag=\"indiana-pacers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Pacers<\/a> (15-40) were fined $100,000 for not playing their stars at all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAfter the team\u2019s February 3 game against, ironically, the Utah Jazz, there were suspicions about the lack of availability of three Pacers players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cFollowing an investigation, including review by an independent physician, the NBA determined that Pascal Siakam, a star player under the Policy, and two other pacers starters, neither of whom participated in the game, could have played under the medical standard of the Policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhile the other two players were not named, Bennedict Mathurin, Andrew Nembhard and T.J. McConnell also sat out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAmong the issues at play here is the quality of the product the league is putting on the floor at a time when it is demanding record broadcast fees.
