{"id":601318,"date":"2026-02-13T18:41:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T18:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/601318\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T18:41:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T18:41:14","slug":"pacers-gm-explains-why-indiana-targeted-ivica-zubac-at-the-trade-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/601318\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacers GM Explains Why Indiana Targeted Ivica Zubac at the Trade Deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6a\">Indiana Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan joined my podcast, Setting The Pace, to discuss the organization\u2019s decision to acquire Ivica Zubac at the NBA Trade Deadline, and why the timing mattered.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6d\">When asked why Indiana identified Zubac as its target, and why now, Buchanan offered a detailed explanation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">\u201cWell, I think going into this season, obviously we had uncertainty and quite a question mark at the starting five,\u201d Buchanan said. \u201cWe knew the other four starting positions were very established. We&#8217;d seen that group work very well together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6n\">Indiana experimented with different options at center throughout the year, but consistency proved elusive.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6q\">\u201cWe gave it a different look at the five this year with a couple of different players, and at different times they had good moments,\u201d Buchanan continued. \u201cBut over the course of the season, it became apparent to us we need to find an established veteran, a win-now starting five, to put with this group. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images | Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"74\">From there, the front office evaluated the league through multiple lenses: fit, character, timeline and financial flexibility.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"77\">\u201cIt was one of those things where we look around the league, you try to identify guys that fit your timeline, fit your character, fit your locker room, fit with your best players,\u201d Buchanan said. \u201cAnd also, obviously, the salary part comes into play as well for us trying to build this team and keep it together. As we looked around the league, we&#8217;ve always had great respect for Ivica.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7a\">Zubac\u2019s track record \u2014 and his past performances against Indiana \u2014 stood out.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7d\">\u201cHe&#8217;s had some big games against us in the past, as we know,\u201d Buchanan said. \u201cAnd his age, some of the things that he does as far as his basketball IQ, his rebounding, his team defense, his passing, his physicality \u2014 it just made a lot of sense for this group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7g\">Buchanan acknowledged that Zubac had been on Indiana\u2019s radar before, but previous attempts to acquire him were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7j\">\u201cHe was a guy we&#8217;ve always targeted in the past. He&#8217;s been unattainable in the past. And luckily there was a window to try to acquire him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7q\">When that window opened, Indiana moved decisively.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7t\">\u201cWe were obviously very aggressive. We gave up a lot to acquire him. It kind of shows you how we feel about him,\u201d Buchanan said. \u201cAnd we feel like this time with this group is either you get in the race or you stay on the sidelines and watch other teams try to race for a championship. And we didn&#8217;t want to sit on the sidelines and watch other teams do that. We want to be in the mix. And this was a move that we feel good about making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7w\">For the Pacers, the message is clear: standing pat was not an option.
