Mandatory Credit: Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

Wallace delivered his latest strong outing in a growing list of impressive performances. The Thunder have given him an increased role during this stretch. The team continues to manage absences from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams. Gilgeous-Alexander has now missed seven straight games.

The Thunder have leaned on timely contributions from role players. Those performances have kept them atop the West. Wallace has not always seized his expanded on-ball role. His double-double snapped a run of underwhelming games.

Over the last seven games, he has averaged 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Wallace has also averaged over two steals per game. His ball security has stood out during this stretch. Wallace has handled lead creator duties effectively. He owns a 3.1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Growth as an On-Ball Creator

Wallace already flashed this upside in a small three-game sample during this seven-game run. During that stretch, he averaged 16 points, four rebounds, five assists, and three steals. He did all this despite inconsistent three-point shooting.

Head coach Mark Daigneault could have something tangible to build on, it just needs a bigger sample size i.e more time on the court. Wallace’s development as an on-ball threat remains a key storyline. Consistency will determine his long-term value in this role.

This growth carries playoff implications. Wallace will need to handle more lead guard duties in tighter rotations. The Thunder will shorten their bench and that leaves a limited number of ball handlers. Wallace will play meaningful minutes especially his ability to run the offense will matter when starters rest.

Contract Pressure Looms

Wallace becomes extension-eligible in July. Oklahoma City has a strong recent history of re-signing its drafted players to a second contract. Wallace and his representatives at Excel Sports Management will likely push for a significant upgrade over his current $24 million contract. A deal near Christian Braun’s five-year, $125 million extension could set the framework.

Wallace will hit restricted free agency in 2027 and will carry a $22.3 million cap hold. The Thunder project to sit above the second apron with Cason Wallace’s extension so that reality complicates negotiations.

His recent double-double strengthens his case. It highlights his playmaking upside. If he sustains this level of production and steadiness, his price will rise quickly. Interesting decisions lie ahead for GM Sam Presti.

Credit:© Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder sit first in the Western Conference with a 44-14 record.
