CLEVELAND \u2014\u00a0Second-year guard Jaylon Tyson<\/a> spent most of this season playing himself into a larger rotational role as the Cavaliers<\/a> look ahead to how they’ll line up in the playoffs. He effectively spent the first 50 games or so forcing his way into Kenny Atkinson’s plans.<\/p>\n

But then the Cavs’ busy trade deadline reshuffled the deck<\/a>. James Harden<\/a>, Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroder<\/a> all entered the mix as veteran guards. Dean Wade returned from injury and has quickly regained an important role in the lineup.<\/p>\n

All of a sudden, the Cavs needed something more refined, more specific, from Tyson<\/a> as the rotation evolved. And once again, he’s having to prove he deserves more minutes on the floor.<\/p>\n

“I mean, you got to earn it, right?” Atkinson said before the Cavs beat the New York Knicks<\/a> 109-94 and in convincing fashion Feb. 24. “It’s definitely probably a smaller window right now, especially if we’re playing 10. As you get healthier, you add people. That’s just how it works out.”<\/p>\n

As a rookie last season, Tyson played sparingly, averaging 3.6 points in 9.6 minutes<\/a>. His usage has exploded this season, up to 13.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 27.3 minutes. While the Cavs battled a series of injuries in the first half of the season, he filled the gaps and became an integral part of the rotation. Atkinson repeatedly noted that Tyson had changed their playoff rotation outlook.<\/p>\n

But the Cavs have returned to something much closer to full strength, and the deadline acquisitions will surely have their slices of the minutes pie. Tyson certainly won’t be disappearing anytime soon, as he’s continued to play well. But his minutes had to be diluted somewhere, putting him again in a position of having to work his way back up that mountain.<\/p>\n

On Jan. 16, he poured in a career-high 39 points. In three of the four games leading into the Cavs’ matchup with the Knicks, now finding his place within this deeper rotation, he had scored seven or fewer points three times.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think it’s easy for anybody, but he’s an extremely mature guy,” Atkinson said. “He gets it. He’s got great veteran support. \u2026 And it’s not just Jaylon, right? It’s other role players, it’s Keon, it’s Dennis. It’s just part of this situation when you have a lot of good players on your roster.”<\/p>\n

With so many other options, the Cavs are looking for a cleaner game from him, in a way. They don’t need him to be a Swiss Army Knife, rather a refined role player who can play to his strengths.<\/p>\n

“Defend, rebound, limit mistakes, make shots. That’s what it is,” Atkinson said. “Your package gets reduced, you know, in situations like this, and he understands that and he’s been great.”<\/p>\n

Star guard Donovan Mitchell<\/a> discussed all of this with Tyson on a recent flight over the All-Star break in an effort to help the second-year guard reshape how he can view his role.<\/p>\n

“I was like hey, you know, it may not be a 40-point night for you. It may not be 30 a night. It may not be a start,” Mitchell said. “But at the end of the day, what he does, you look at him being the five-man tonight, playing the pick and roll and passing to him as a layup, he’s [making the] floater, he’s making decisions \u2014 that’s what we’re going to need from him. That’s his bread and butter.”<\/p>\n

And so begins the second chapter of Tyson trying to carve out the largest role he can before the playoffs arrive.<\/p>\n
