SAN FRANCISCO \u2013 Draymond Green has won four championships, been named to nine All-Defense teams and earned one Defensive Player of the Year award during his 14-year career with the Warriors<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With a resume like that for one of sports\u2019 biggest global brand<\/a>s, it could be seen as a surprise that it took this long for an international music powerhouse to name-drop him in a song.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ultra-popular Korean girl group Blackpink<\/a> recently released a new album, \u201cDeadline\u201d and referenced the Warriors\u2019 veteran in the song \u201cMe and My.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cJust me and my day ones, pretty girls walkin\u2019. Golden like we Draymond, they pay us for a walk-in,\u201d is the line sung by Blackpink\u2019s Lisa.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Though not an ardent stan \u2013 although it would be understandable if Green\u2019s bias was Lisa now \u2013 Green still appreciated being referenced by one of K-Pop\u2019s most popular groups. He broke out a wide smile and began nodding his head when asked about the song after finishing his shooting drills at Chase Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s pretty exciting, man,\u201d Green told the Bay Area News Group after Monday\u2019s shootaround. \u201cYou get name-dropped in a rap song, it\u2019s pretty fun. When you get name-dropped in a K-Pop song, you may be a pretty big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the world of K-Pop, there are few groups that can say they\u2019re a bigger deal than Blackpink.<\/p>\n

by mid-February, Blackpink became the first music group to surpass 100 million subscribers<\/a> on YouTube. They boast 24 million monthly listeners<\/a> on streaming platform Spotify.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Being mentioned in songs by chart-toppers is nothing new for Green, who said that getting a mention from his \u201cGOAT\u201d Jay-Z in an album would be his dream name-drop.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hip-hop titan Drake said \u201cyou know Chubbs like Draymond\u201d during \u201cSummer Sixteen\u201d back in 2016, a reference to Green protecting Steph Curry like Drake\u2019s bodyguard Chubbs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is also far from the first time a group from the K-Pop industry has dabbled in the NBA world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Aside from vintage NBA jerseys having been a mainstay in music videos since at least the early-2010s \u2013 anyone remember Girls Generation rocking Kobe Bryant and Paul Pierce attire<\/a> circa 2014? \u2013 the NBA has been proactive in tapping into the rabid fanbases that follow K-Pop groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Girl group Le Sserafim headlined a \u201cFriends of the NBA\u201d<\/a> program in 2024, and purple-and-gold Chaewon jerseys can still be seen at Lakers games.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And in the Bay Area, a member of boy group GOT7 was instrumental in getting then-Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins voted into the 2022 NBA All-Star game,<\/a> voicing his support for Wiggins on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Green has watched \u201cK-Pop Demon Hunters\u201d with his kids, but is not quite as rabid as the fans who spend thousands of dollars on tickets to sold-out concerts. But both he and people in his personal circle were well-aware of how big Blackpink is in the music scene.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He was bombarded with messages after the album came out, but is waiting to listen to the song.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m waiting to listen to it with my kids, and we\u2019re supposed to listen to it on the way to the game,\u201d Green said. \u201cMy daughters love K-Pop.\u201d<\/p>\n
