It was well understood during Jim Boeheim\u2019s time as head coach of the Syracuse men\u2019s basketball team that he read every local writer who covered the team and listened to every local radio show that discussed them.<\/p>\n
FS1\u2019s Danny Parkins, who had a stint as a sports talk host in Syracuse, NY, learned that lesson all too well.<\/p>\n

He would be driving home, and he\u2019d hear me say something,\u201d Parkins told Cowherd. \u201cIf national media ever criticized him, he never said anything. But if local media ever criticized him, he was like, \u2018I\u2019m the biggest game in town,\u2019 and he was.<\/p>\n \u201c[Syracuse guards] Brandon Triche and Scoop Jardine. I was like, \u2018You got to name one of them the point guard.\u2019 Phone line rings for my postgame show. Call screener is like, \u2018It\u2019s Jim in Syracuse.\u2019 He\u2019s like, \u2018That Jim.\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018What? Put him on.’\u201d<\/p>\n Parkins then connected with the ornery head coach, who couldn\u2019t wait until he was home from the game to call in.<\/p>\n \u201cHe goes, \u2018Listening to your show, driving home from our win, by the way,’\u201d Parkins said. \u201cHe goes, \u2018I just want you to know that you say I need to name a point guard. If they\u2019re not pressing, you could bring the ball up across half the court. It doesn\u2019t matter.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cIt was incredible. One of the greatest moments of my career. I was like, \u2018Oh, my God, that\u2019s such a good point. That\u2019s why you\u2019re a Hall of Famer. Thanks for calling me. First time, long time. Don\u2019t be a stranger.\u2019 And it was the greatest. And we\u2019ve had a pretty good relationship ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n Parkins is hardly the only radio host to get a phone call from \u201cJim from Syracuse\u201d or \u201cJim in Fayetteville\u201d during the show. Former Syracuse radio host Brent Axe would routinely find himself in that situation<\/a> after discussing Syracuse basketball.<\/p>\n
