NBA player Luke Kornet is asking the Atlanta Hawks to cancel a promotion it planned in partnership with a local gentlemen\u2019s club, saying the event would \u201creflect poorly\u201d on the league.<\/p>\n

Kornet, who plays for the San Antonio Spurs, wrote in a blog post published Monday that the NBA \u201cshould desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world,\u201d and cancel the event promoting Atlanta\u2019s Magic City.<\/p>\n

\u201cAllowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society,\u201d Kornet argued<\/a>. \u201cRegardless of how a woman finds her way into the adult entertainment industry, many in this space experience abuse, harassment, and violence to which they should never be subjected.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hawks announced the promotion<\/a> last week, calling it a \u201cone-night collaboration to celebrate the city\u2019s iconic cultural institution\u201d Magic City during the team\u2019s home game against Orlando on March 16.<\/p>\n

The team is planning to have rapper and Atlanta native T.I. perform some of his best-known songs at halftime, sponsored by Jack Daniels and with local DJ Esco to curate\u00a0pregame music.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis collaboration and\u00a0theme night\u00a0is very meaningful to me after all the work that we did to put together\u00a0\u2019Magic City: An American Fantasy\u2019,\u201d Hawks owner Jami Gertz said in a statement at the time. \u201cThe iconic Atlanta institution\u00a0has made such an incredible\u00a0impact on\u00a0our\u00a0city and\u00a0its unique\u00a0culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Hawks player Al Horford praised Kornet\u2019s comments in a social media post, calling them \u201cwell said.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hawks did not respond to a request for comment on Kornet\u2019s criticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to encourage the league, its owners, employees and fans to hold the Atlanta Hawks to a higher standard of what they find worthy of promoting,\u201d the Spurs center wrote as part of his blog post. \u201cI and others throughout the league were surprised by and object to the Hawks\u2019 decision. We desire to provide an environment where fans of all ages can safely come and enjoy the game of basketball and where we can celebrate the history and culture of communities in good conscience.\u201d<\/p>\n
