MILWAUKEE (AP) \u2014 Add another chapter to UConn coach Dan Hurley\u2019s combative history with officials just as March Madness is approaching.<\/p>\n
Hurley was ejected from the fourth-ranked<\/a> Huskies\u2019 68-62 loss<\/a> to Marquette on Saturday after picking up two technical fouls with one second remaining. A couple hours after the game, the Big East fined Hurley $25,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct.<\/p>\n \u201cWe hold our coaches to high standards of sportsmanlike conduct during game competition, and inappropriate interactions with our officials will not be tolerated,\u201d Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman said in a statement.<\/p>\n Hurley argued that UConn\u2019s Silas Demary Jr. was fouled by Marquette\u2019s Ben Gold while driving to the basket<\/a> with the Huskies trailing 64-62.<\/p>\n Hurley approached John Gaffney and got his chest next to the official\u2019s right shoulder while voicing his displeasure. Hurley said he never bumped into Gaffney, though some replays suggested otherwise.<\/p>\n Big East officials said a review by the conference of the officials’ game report and available game footage couldn’t confirm any physical contact between Hurley and Gaffney.<\/p>\n \u201cYou could screen-shot whatever you want to screen-shot,\u201d Hurley said. \u201cI don\u2019t feel like I made any contact with John. I don\u2019t believe I did.\u201d<\/p>\n No foul was called on Demary\u2019s driving attempt. Marquette\u2019s Chase Ross got the rebound, was fouled and then made four of six free throws to seal the victory that prevented UConn from sharing the Big East regular-season title with No. 18 St. John\u2019s. Two of the free throws were the result of the foul on the floor and the other four were from the technical fouls.<\/p>\n Hurley did say he yelled, \u201cFoul! Foul!\u201d toward the back of Gaffney\u2019s head arguing for a call on Gold. But he repeatedly said that he didn\u2019t believe he bumped into the official. Cameras showed Hurley shaking his head as he headed off the floor after the ejection.<\/p>\n Since Hurley didn\u2019t believe he made any physical contact with the official, he had said after the game he didn’t expect to get any additional punishment heading into the Big East Tournament that starts Wednesday at New York. UConn is waiting to learn which team it will face in Thursday\u2019s Big East quarterfinal.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been ejected before, and I\u2019ve been back out there,\u201d Hurley said. \u201cIt\u2019s not my first rodeo.\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s certainly true.<\/p>\n As Hurley has cemented his status as one of the game\u2019s top coaches by leading UConn to back-to-back national titles in 2023 and 2024, his frequent run-ins with officials have become regular sights on social media. Perhaps the most notable example came last year, when cameras showed Hurley vocally criticizing the officiating as he walked into the tunnel after UConn\u2019s NCAA Tournament loss<\/a> to Florida last season.<\/p>\n \u201cListen the officiating for us, it is what it is in this league,\u201d Hurley said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to comment on that.\u201d<\/p>\n Hurley had just finished making that comment when he added that the second foul called on UConn\u2019s Tarris Reed Jr. on Saturday was \u201ca joke\u201d and \u201ca really bad call.\u201d<\/p>\n Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season.
