We missed a couple shots. It got to our defense a little bit so they were able to get out on the break a little early.

“It was the little things within this game,” he added. “We definitely were a step slow tonight. … We didn’t win the possession game and that’s what they thrive on.”

Orlando gave up 33-plus points in each of the opening three quarters and trailed by as many as 29 points in the 12-point road loss. Down 21 entering the fourth, it got within 12 with 3 1/2 minutes remaining but fell short of a late comeback.

Backed by 41 points from Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Atlanta (37-31) secured the regular-season series by beating Orlando a third time this year. The sides meet a fourth and final time April 1 in Central Florida on ESPN.

“We’re going to be fine,” Magic guard Desmond Bane said in the locker room. “We’ve been through this so many times. We just won seven games in a row. We lost one game. We’ve got another one tomorrow. That’s the mentality.”

To Bane’s point, the Magic (38-29) have a quick turnaround when they head home to host the defending champion Thunder on Tuesday night at Kia Center.

Slow start

Orlando found itself down 13 at the end of the first quarter and then trailing by 17 at the half.

The Hawks not only shot the ball better from distance but they also controlled the boards from the jump. Although the Magic shot 8 for 23 in the first quarter, they grabbed zero offensive rebounds.

By the break, Atlanta held a 12-4 advantage in second-chance scoring thanks an 8-2 difference on the offensive glass.

“It happens,” Bane (18 points) said about Orlando’s start. “It’s a long season. You don’t always play your best. I just didn’t think we had our necessary juice on both ends of the floor. … We didn’t really dictate much and allowed them to kind of do whatever they wanted.”

Although Paolo Banchero scored 11 first-half points, he shot 1 for 7 from the floor and scored his first eight points at the free throw line. His lone first-half field goal was a 3-pointer with 4:18 left in the second quarter.

Glass break

Orlando’s inability to rebound on the defensive end only grew from there.

Overall, Atlanta grabbed 15 offensive rebounds by out-rebounding Orlando 54-41. The Hawks finished with a 19-13 edge in second-chance scoring.

The Hawks’ effort on the boards was led by Dyson Daniels (12 rebounds) and Jalen Johnson (15), who grabbed a total of 27 rebounds.

Difference from distance

Thanks to five first-half 3-pointers from Alexander-Walker, the Hawks shot 9 for 22 (41%) from beyond the arc.

Meanwhile, Orlando saw Jalen Suggs miss his first fours 3s and the team overall go 5 for 20 (25%) in the opening half. Suggs scored eight points in 28 minutes.

“Early on, we had incredible looks,” Mosley said when asked about Orlando’s shot selection. “We were wide open on a ton of them. We just missed them and those were leading to breaks. They did a great job of pressuring up and turning us over later on.”

Atlanta ended 16 for 41 (39%) and it held the Magic to just 14 for 43 (33%) from distance for the night.

Rookie watch

Second-round pick Noah Penda was held scoreless in six minutes of action throughout the first three quarters.

The French forward ended with two points in 14 total minutes.

First-round pick Jase Richardson didn’t enter the game until the Magic were down 20 with 5 1/2 minutes left in the game. He scored six points in limited action.

Jason Beede can be reached at jbeede@orlandosentinel.com

ATLANTA — The Magic believed they had turned a corner out of the NBA All-Star break when they…

[3776
676,208,3874,7,677,165,6,76,1412,80939,66
0":"post-662185","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-atlanta-hawks","8":"tag-atlanta","9":"tag-atlanta-hawks","10":"tag-atlantahawks","11":"tag-basketball","12":"tag-hawks","13":"tag-latest-headlines","14":"tag-nba","15":"tag-orlando-magic","16":"tag-social","17":"tag-social-sports","18":"tag-sports
["GET
