Since joining the ECHL in 2005, the Grizzlies have averaged 12th in league attendance among the league\u2019s 30 teams.\u00a0<\/p>\n Advertisement<\/p>\n Thousands of Utahns flocked to the Grizzlies\u2019 home, the Maverik Center<\/a>, each year, just to experience the game. If they weren\u2019t going to a Jazz game, it would be the Grizzlies. We bring all of our family with us, it\u2019s a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n Many fans enjoyed the drama as a heated rivalry grew between the Grizzlies and their northern neighbor, the Idaho Steelheads. Players on both teams went pound-for-pound, always looking for a way to gain the upper hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n Others enjoy the themed nights promoted in the ECHL, such as the Grizzlies\u2019 famous military night<\/a>. Fans also reminisced about the glory days of the Grizzlies\u2019 recent playoff success, such as the Western Conference finals series against the Toledo Walleyes.<\/p>\n Advertisement<\/p>\n \u201cThat playoff run in 2022 was a ton of fun. It turned out to be the only division championship in team history,\u201d said Whiting when asked about that playoff run.<\/p>\n Even though the Grizzlies lost that Western Conference<\/a> series against the Walleyes, fans look upon the journey<\/a> of beating teams<\/a> like the Tulsa Oilers and Rapid City Rush quite fondly.<\/p>\n If you go to a Grizzlies game, you\u2019ll hear horns blowing, cowbells jingling, and the fans\u2019 famous chants when a player gets sent to the penalty box. The fans yell the player\u2019s name and yell \u201cshame, shame, shame, and you suck\u201d! Or, when the opposing team comes back to full strength, the PA announcer announces the player\u2019s return and the fans come back with a thunderous roar, \u201cAND THEY STILL SUCK\u201d.<\/p>\n Advertisement<\/p>\n \u201cPeople love hockey\u201d, another fan told The Lead. \u201cA lot of people like it because of the hitting and the fights. We just like to come, there\u2019s nothing better to do.\u201d<\/p>\n Impact on the Players<\/p>\n It\u2019s not just the fans the Grizzlies have impacted, but the players as well. The team has seen many great players come through its ranks. Ryan Kinasewich was one of them. In his tenure with the Grizzlies, Kinasewich scored<\/a> 156 goals, 200 assists, and 356 points\u2013making him the franchise\u2019s highest scorer in history. He even spent seven years<\/a> as both an assistant and head coach of the team.<\/p>\n When asked by the Deseret News<\/a> about the state and the team, these were his thoughts: \u201cI have a ton of great memories here,\u201d Kinaswich said. \u201cMet my fianc\u00e9 here and consider this home now.\u201d<\/p>\n Advertisement<\/p>\n The Lead interviewed a few players after a recent game against the Oilers in March. 12, 2026<\/a>, to ask about their thoughts on the state of Utah. Sadly, the team will be leaving after this season for Trenton, New Jersey<\/a>, to become the Skyhawks.\u00a0David Elmore<\/a>, the owner who brought the Grizzlies to Utah, passed away in 2023, leaving the team to his family. The organization felt confident the team would continue to thrive in Utah until another tragedy occurred.<\/p>\n \u201cA big turning point was May 9, 2025, when Grizzlies CEO Kevin Bruder passed away,\u201d said Whiting, when asked about the team moving. \u201cWhatever reason that seemed to be kind of the last straw to get the ball rolling, and Elmore\u2019s were able to find a seller.\u201d<\/p>\n Advertisement<\/p>\n After Bruder\u2019s death in 2005, the team\u2019s President and CEO,\u00a0Bruder,<\/a> left a leadership void\u00a0for the organization, and ownership felt it best to sell the team.<\/p>\n Passing the Torch<\/p>\n Hockey culture in Utah will never be the same after the Grizzlies leave town. The team brought excitement to hockey when the state was dominated by elite basketball teams like the Jazz. Without the contributions of the Grizzlies, such as creating new fans, starting youth programs, and maintaining the culture, the Mammoth wouldn\u2019t have embedded itself into Utah so quickly.<\/p>\n Fans will forever remember the Grizzlies for their ability to help bring families to games with cheap tickets and quality entertainment.
