SOUTH BEND \u2015\u00a0In case\u00a0the\u00a0Notre Dame\u00a0administration\u00a0decided it best to hit the snooze button after that\u00a0February\u00a0wake-up call\u00a0about\u00a0its\u00a0basketball program, the alarm clock is\u00a0chirping\u00a0again.<\/p>\n

If it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0enough that\u00a0Notre Dame basketball <\/a>lost to\u00a0top-ranked\u00a0Duke<\/a> last\u00a0month\u00a0at home by 44 points,\u00a0the\u00a0largest margin of victory in Purcell\u00a0Pavilion history, this week happened.\u00a0Is\u00a0happening.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0just over\u00a0a\u00a0recent\u00a024-hour\u00a0stretch, Notre Dame\u00a0saw\u00a0three players\u00a0enter\u00a0the\u00a0transfer portal, the\u00a0same number it lost in two\u00a0previous\u00a0seasons\u00a0combined\u00a0under head coach Micah Shrewsberry. Three transfers down, at least\u00a0three\u00a0transfers\u00a0to go.\u00a0Maybe tomorrow\u00a0or the next day or early next month, but\u00a0there will be more.\u00a0Bad news\u00a0is on the doorstep.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0round is just the start. This next\u00a0round\u00a0will cut the program\u00a0to its core. It will set it back seasons. Hopefully, it will open some eyes.<\/p>\n

Losing\u00a0at least\u00a0six players in one transfer cycle\u00a0should be enough for\u00a0athletic director Pete\u00a0Bevacqua and general manager (and former Irish All-American) Pat Garrity to\u00a0see\u00a0that whatever they’ve done financially to date for the\u00a0basketball\u00a0program,\u00a0whatever they plan to do\u00a0moving forward, is not enough. Not good enough.\u00a0Not close enough.<\/p>\n

Forget the\u00a0basketball adage\u00a0about\u00a0being two years away from two years away.\u00a0Notre Dame basketball\u00a0is light years away from\u00a0the lights\u00a0of\u00a0another NCAA Tournament.\u00a0March Madness? Not around here. Not anytime soon.<\/p>\n

The game has changed; Notre Dame\u00a0hasn\u2019t.\u00a0If\u00a0it\u00a0cared\u00a0about Notre Dame basketball, if\u00a0it wants\u00a0Notre Dame basketball to survive, if\u00a0it\u00a0hopes\u00a0for\u00a0Notre Dame basketball to\u00a0thrive again,\u00a0a greater financial commitment\u00a0is paramount.\u00a0Not tomorrow. Today.<\/p>\n

Whatever\u00a0millions of\u00a0dollars\u00a0set aside for 2026-27\u00a0are not enough.\u00a0Find\u00a0more\u00a0dollars\u00a0to make\u00a0this\u00a0crazy sport\u00a0make sense.<\/p>\n

When sophomores Sir Mohammed and Garrett Sundra and\u00a0freshman\u00a0Ryder Frost announced plans to enter the transfer portal, which opens April 7, it had little\u00a0to do with\u00a0a\u00a0chance to make more money elsewhere\u00a0as it did the chance to play more minutes elsewhere. Somewhere.\u00a0Anywhere but here.<\/p>\n

The three,\u00a0for myriad reasons, never became key rotation players in Shrewsberry\u2019s system.\u00a0Each leave\u00a0for more opportunity on the basketball court. The next three expected to\u00a0exit\u00a0\u2015\u00a0Markus\u00a0Burton\u00a0(a Michiana native), Cole Certa\u00a0(Shrewsberry\u2019s first recruit to Notre Dame) and\u00a0Jalen Haralson\u00a0(the highest-rated\u00a0recruit in program history)\u00a0\u2015\u00a0will\u00a0depart, in\u00a0large\u00a0part,\u00a0to deepen\u00a0their bank accounts.<\/p>\n

Each could make close to or beyond seven figures as college basketball players.\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0less interested in earning a\u00a0Notre Dame degree and more interested in\u00a0earning\u00a0money.\u00a0More money than\u00a0they\u00a0ever dreamed of playing this game.\u00a0That matters.<\/p>\n

That\u00a0is college\u00a0basketball today.\u00a0This\u00a0four for 40\u00a0stuff\u00a0that Notre Dame so trumpets\u00a0was nice while it lasted, but it ran its course\u00a0even before\u00a0former head coach\u00a0Mike Brey decided that\u00a0it was time to get out\u00a0after 23 seasons and\u00a0483\u00a0wins.<\/p>\n

A Notre Dame degree? Nobody cares.\u00a0Pay\u00a0me.<\/p>\n

The game, the entire college basketball\u00a0world, changed\u00a0almost\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0minute Shrewsberry strode down the tunnel from the Irish\u00a0locker room\u00a0and onto the Purcell\u00a0Pavilion floor to the sounds of the Notre Dame Victory March for his introductory press conference on March 30, 2023.<\/p>\n

College basketball\u00a0has\u00a0become an even bigger business.\u00a0A pay\u00a0for play business.\u00a0Professional\u00a0sport in every sense.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0less about what a school can\u00a0do for you over the next 40 years and more about what\u00a0you can do\u00a0in four, or\u00a0however long it takes\u00a0to get your game NBA-ready.<\/p>\n

It has been three long seasons of frustration and failure under\u00a0Shrewsberry. If Irish fans knew then what they know now about\u00a0the Irish head coach\u00a0…<\/p>\n

Fair, but that\u00a0ball bounces\u00a0both ways. If Shrewsberry knew then what he knows\u00a0now\u00a0about college basketball and\u00a0about how Notre Dame would\u00a0struggle\u00a0to\u00a0keep up,\u00a0he\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0leave Penn State.<\/p>\n

Shrewsberry\u00a0must\u00a0coach better.\u00a0He\u00a0must\u00a0teach better.\u00a0Recruit better.\u00a0Develop better. A lot of\u00a0this is on the head coach.\u00a0But his employer also\u00a0must\u00a0do better.\u00a0It\u00a0must\u00a0care more than it has\u00a0cared.\u00a0This is one of the top 10 (eighth) winningest programs in the\u00a0sport\u2019s\u00a0history. Treat it like one.<\/p>\n

All those years\u00a0of\u00a0Brey\u00a0often doing\u00a0more with less\u00a0lulled\u00a0the administration\u00a0into\u00a0a\u00a0false sense of success. When it came time to commit, the\u00a0university\u00a0looked\u00a0the other way. It was slow to renovate the arena. It was slow to\u00a0build a practice facility.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0slow to admit\u00a0where the sport is today, and what it takes to get there.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0time to\u00a0pick up the pace and stop\u00a0pretending it can be done another way.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0competent, capable basketball roster\u00a0that competes\u00a0in March\u00a0likely\u00a0starts\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0$10 million\u00a0price tag. No discounts. No shortcuts.\u00a0Notre Dame\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0spend half of that. Maybe not even a third of that.\u00a0Do this sport on the cheap, and\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0left with the\u00a0Duke\u00a0game.\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0left with players\u00a0running\u00a0to the portal.\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0left with little\u00a0hope and a lot of heartache.<\/p>\n

There are\u00a0plenty of\u00a0college programs that deal with\u00a0this every single season \u2015 the losing record, the roster turnover, the frustration\u00a0of not being better, the inability to build a roster than can beat ranked teams, the lack of funds.\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0called mid-majors.<\/p>\n

Notre Dame\u00a0runs\u00a0like a mid-major.\u00a0That hurts.<\/p>\n

Mohammed and Sundra and Frost\u00a0are gone. Burton\u00a0and\u00a0Certa\u00a0and Haralson\u00a0are going.
