{"id":681083,"date":"2026-03-27T00:21:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T00:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/681083\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T00:21:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T00:21:21","slug":"boston-college-names-uconns-luke-murray-head-mens-basketball-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/681083\/","title":{"rendered":"Boston College names UConn\u2019s Luke Murray head men\u2019s basketball coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Boston College men\u2019s basketball program that has spent the better part of two decades wandering in the wilderness has found its latest savior.<\/p>\n<p>The Eagles named UConn assistant coach Luke Murray, son of actor Bill Murray, as its next head coach Thursday night. The soon-to-be 41-year-old has spent the last 16 years as an assistant coach for six different Division I programs, including the last five years on Dan Hurley\u2019s Huskies staff, which won two national titles.<\/p>\n<p>Murray replaces Earl Grant, who was fired earlier this month after five mostly unimpressive seasons that saw the Eagles compile a 72-92 record with zero NCAA Tournament trips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday marks a turning point in Boston College men\u2019s basketball,\u201d Boston College athletic director Blake James said in a news release announcing the hire. \u201cIn Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball \u2014 he has helped define it. His role in building a national championship caliber program, his sophisticated offensive vision, and his relentless pursuit of excellence make him the perfect fit to lead our student-athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this will be Murray\u2019s first head-coaching gig, his last three assistant coaching stops have come at high-major programs in Xavier, Louisville and UConn. Murray followed Mack to Louisville and helped guide the 2018-19 team to an at-large bid in the tournament. The 2019-20 squad almost assuredly would\u2019ve reached the tournament as well, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Murray played a significant role in crafting UConn\u2019s offense during its recent run of success under Hurley. Now he\u2019ll look to implement that same expertise at a Boston College program that hasn\u2019t qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 17 seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The Eagles\u2019 last March Madness run came in 2009 \u2014 the second-to-last of Al Skinner\u2019s 13 seasons as head coach. The program has cycled through three head coaches since Skinner left the program in 2010. Not one of those coaches posted a winning record during their BC tenures, as the Eagles have struggled to find their footing as one of the northernmost outposts of the ACC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Boston College men\u2019s basketball program,\u201d Murray said in the release announcing his hire. \u201cBC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition. Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough, and highly competitive brand of basketball.
