NEW YORK \u2014 The NBA has handed down a one-game suspension without pay to Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic after he accumulated his 16th technical foul of the current season, league officials confirmed Saturday.<\/p>\n
The league\u2019s top scorer received dual technical fouls in the third period of Los Angeles\u2019 commanding 116-99 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday evening.<\/p>\n
The incident began when Brooklyn\u2019s Ziaire Williams enthusiastically celebrated an offensive foul call against Doncic by shouting directly at the star player from close range. Doncic attempted to push Williams\u2019 arm away, prompting Williams to swing his hand across Doncic\u2019s face in response.<\/p>\n
NBA regulations mandate an automatic one-game suspension without compensation once any player or coach accumulates 16 technical fouls in a regular season. Additional suspensions follow for every pair of technical fouls beyond that threshold.<\/p>\n
The suspension will take effect Monday when Los Angeles welcomes the Washington Wizards to their home court. Doncic contributed 41 points in the victory over Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
Following Friday\u2019s contest, Doncic explained his perspective on the altercation: \u201cHe was yelling in my face three times. I just wanted to get out of there. It\u2019s a double tech, of course. What can I say? I didn\u2019t even talk. I just wanted to get out of there. (The referee) said my push was exaggerated, which (it) was obviously not. I don\u2019t know what else to say.\u201d<\/p>\n
Game officials conducted a review of the confrontation before assessing technical fouls to both participants.<\/p>\n
The league recently overturned one of Doncic\u2019s previous technical fouls from last week following a dispute with Orlando\u2019s Goga Bitadze. While the NBA did not provide an official explanation for the reversal, Doncic claimed Bitadze made derogatory comments about his family in Serbian, which Bitadze disputed.<\/p>\n
