Louis Martinette, who works at Ocean View Golf Course in Norfolk, has more than a keen interest in the April 5 NCAA Division III men\u2019s basketball championship game.<\/p>\n
Until he retired in 2019, Martinette was a marketing professor at the University of Mary Washington and was the academic adviser for the men\u2019s basketball team. \u201cI have remained in touch with head coach Marcus Kahn and assistant coach Mark Sansone, two first-class individuals that have produced consistently competitive teams since they were hired.\u201d<\/p>\n
Especially this year, when UMW has made the title game for the first time. A couple of hours after its Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference rival Christopher Newport fell to Emory in the first semifinal in Fort Wayne, Indiana, UMW (29-3) made a late comeback against top-ranked Trinity of Connecticut and upended the defending national champion. That earned Kahn\u2019s Eagles a ticket to Indianapolis for the championship game, which is part of a basketball festival that will include the Division I Final Four.<\/p>\n
Martinette noted that two Oscar Smith High graduates are on the team. Anthony Lewis, a 6-foot-2 freshman, has played in half of UMW\u2019s games, averaging 3.3 points and 6.4 minutes in the 16 he has entered. Ulysses Young, a 5-11 sophomore, has played in 28 games, starting 25, and is averaging 10.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 30.8 minutes.<\/p>\n
The only Eagle averaging more minutes per game is second-team All-American Kye Robinson.<\/p>\n
Nationals are back on cable: We originally wondered if people would care very much that Washington Nationals games are no longer on MASN, or that MASN2 \u2014 which was necessary because the Nats and Baltimore Orioles often play at the same time \u2014 no longer exists.<\/p>\n
But as it turned out, not too much changed at all, at least for Cox Communications cable subscribers. Nationals.TV is now being carried on channel 159.<\/p>\n
One side effect of the Nationals\u2019 exit from MASN is more air time for the Norfolk Tides there. They already have lots of home games carried locally on WTVZ and WGNT.<\/p>\n
Lining up United: Virginia Beach United, coming off a playoff appearance, re-signed former Smithfield High and Virginia Wesleyan defender Josh Condit. The club also signed Georgia Southern midfielder Harry Dale of Repton, England, and High Point and Richmond United ECNL attacker Nick Sarantakos for its men\u2019s team. It will open the season with a May 9 match at Virginia Beach Sportsplex against rival Lionsbridge FC of Newport News.<\/p>\n
The VBU women\u2019s squad re-signed Abigail Simon, who grew up in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and had six goals and five assists in 15 matches for Chowan in 2024.<\/p>\n

Thursday: The Colonial Relays start at W&M\u2019s Zable Stadium. \u2026 Old Dominion begins a home baseball series against Southern Mississippi at 6 p.m. Even if it\u2019s a large crowd by ODU standards, it won\u2019t be anything near the average Southern Miss home crowd \u2014 or especially the 12,887 that Mississippi State, in its first year under former Virginia coach Brian O\u2019Connor \u2014 drew for their home game Tuesday night against Southern Miss in Starkville.<\/p>\n
