Utah State finalizes deal with Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson<\/a><\/p>\nJacobson racked up 400 wins, five Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Titles, five March Madness appearances, and a trip to the Sweet 16 \u2014 all at one school.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t think he was moveable,” Utah State Athletic Director Cam Walker said. “I didn’t think he would leave.”<\/p>\n
That loyalty stood out to Walker.<\/p>\n
“He has done incredible things, been where we want to go,” Walker said. “To have some trust that he’ll sustain that for a while was important.”<\/p>\n
Why was Utah State the right job to leave for?<\/p>\n
“Certainly, knowing about the tradition and history of Utah State helped to be able to jump into it,” Jacobson said. “You get to know the President a little bit, get to know Cam [Walker] and his staff, and the vision they’ve got for the program. Add those two things up, and it’s like ‘Man, I really want to be a part of that. We could do some special things.'”<\/p>\n
It was also about timing.<\/p>\n
“Personally, it also lined up for Dawn and me,” Jacobson said. “Our boys are 22 and 20, in places where they maybe don’t need us quite as much.”<\/p>\n
Jacobson has goals of leading this team to the second weekend of March Madness and beyond. He said that it starts with the current players.<\/p>\n
Many attended his introductory press conference, like Karson Templin and Mason Falslev. Jacobson would be Falslev’s fourth coach during his time as an Aggie.<\/p>\n
“They are the most important ones in this equation,” Jacobson said. “This isn’t necessarily what they signed up for. I give them a lot of credit for staying through those changes. I’m going to ask them in a powerful way to build the relationships here in short order and do it one more time.”<\/p>\n
Jacobson has gotten right to work. He met with the current players on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n
