While they hope to have a new executive in place by the start of the 2026 NBA Draft, they haven’t officially started their search and won’t do so until the season ends in two weeks.

A few names have been thrown out there by different league insiders, but Marc Stein suggested one that a lot of teams have tried to lure away from his current role: former Golden State Warriors general manager and president of basketball operations Bob Myers.

“League sources tell The Stein Line that the most frequently whispered Dallas target from that category is actually former Golden State Warriors lead executive Bob Myers, who would naturally have [Mavericks CEO Rick] Welts’ strong backing after their successful years together with the Warriors,” Stein wrote. “Yet Myers currently holds an extremely lucrative job as president for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment that calls for him to provide high-level consulting for all of the pro sports franchises in the HBSE portfolio…”

With Myers’ current role, he has a hand in dealing with the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils. Those are roles he would have to give up if he were to come back and be a basketball operations executive.

Patrick Dumont lured Rick Welts out of retirement to help lead the campaign for a new arena, who was team president for the Warriors from 2011 to 2021, then stayed on as an advisor until 2024. That gives him a lot of familiarity with Bob Myers, so if anyone could convince Myers to do it, it may be Welts.

Dec 25, 2022; San Francisco, California, USA; Golden State Warriors president Bob Myers before the game against the Memphis Grizzlies at Chase Center. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images | Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images

How Appealing is the Dallas Mavericks Job?

On one hand, the Mavericks are a franchise with great success dating back to the early 2000s with Dirk Nowitzki, but there are probably a lot of people turned off by how the team’s governor, Patrick Dumont, handled the Luka Doncic trade. They may also see it as they may be able to sway him more easily, but Dumont hopefully has learned from that lesson and will seek multiple opinions before making a trade as grandiose as that one.

However, the Mavs do have a budding young superstar in Cooper Flagg, who has been fantastic in his rookie season, they have a lottery pick in this loaded 2026 draft class, and a few other intriguing pieces that could become a contender if the right moves are made.

The only thing that could keep this from being a great job is the current dispute between Mark Cuban and Patrick Dumont. Cuban is still in the limelight as a minority owner, and he recently came out on record and said he regrets selling to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont. That’s a wild thing to say about the current majority owner while still being a minority owner, and knowing they could cut his stake in the team down to 7% at any point.

That could take some shine off this job, but Patrick Dumont has his eyes set on the biggest candidates.

Stick with MavericksGameday for more FREE coverage of the Dallas Mavericks throughout the 2025-26 season

Follow MavericksGameday on Twitter and Austin Veazey on Twitter

The Dallas Mavericks have an opening at general manager after deservedly firing Nico Harrison in November.
