The team has someone in that role now in third-year pro Gradey Dick, but the former lottery pick out of Kansas simply has not lived up to his high expectations this season.

Dick was improving as a player in the first two seasons of his career, but things have slowed down in his third year in Toronto. Adding Brandon Ingram over the offseason made Dick’s role in the offense a little different, and he has struggled to respond to the changes in a positive way.

This has resulted in drops in all major statistical categories, and it means that the Raptors could look to move on from Dick as his contract ends following the 2026-27 season.

Why Gradey Dick Trade Makes Sense For Raptors

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson dribbles against Toronto Raptors guard/forward Gradey Dick. | Stephen Lew-Imagn Images

The Raptors could trade Dick for a player that fits his archetype or they could do it simply to open up a roster spot that could go to a rookie the team can develop or for a free agent that feels more comfortable in that kind of role.

“Following a breakout sophomore season, Gradey Dick’s role has been reduced significantly now. His 6.3 points in 14.9 minutes a game are both career lows,” Bleacher Report contributor Greg Swartz wrote.

“The former lottery pick is extension eligible this offseason, although it’s hard to imagine the Raptors giving him any kind of real money given his current role. Dick could request a trade to a location where the opportunity would be more plentiful.

“With a core that should land them a top-6 seed in the East, the Raptors will likely only make their bench players available via trade instead.”

The Raptors are locked in with their core since all of them are on hefty, long-term deals. RJ Barrett is the only one not signed through the 2026-27 season. He will also receive some trade interest, but a contract extension could also be in the cards, especially after a strong second half of the season.

Dick was once viewed as a key piece to the Raptors’ future, but it ultimately hasn’t worked out for him. He needs to join a team like the Brooklyn Nets or Memphis Grizzlies that could give him more of an opportunity to play and grow before he hits the free agent market in just over a year from now.

The Nets are giving many players opportunities to play and they are prioritizing development, so Dick could be someone who benefits playing in that system. As for the Grizzlies, they have completely rebuilt their roster after trading Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz, so putting Dick in Memphis would give them a chance to evaluate him and see if he could be part of their future.

Sign up for our free newsletter, which will bring all Toronto Raptors On SI stories every weekday to your email.

The Toronto Raptors are gearing up for a playoff run this spring, but the summer should bring some…

[3770
7,6,681,680,476,3820
0":"post-692425","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-toronto-raptors","8":"tag-basketball","9":"tag-nba","10":"tag-raptors","11":"tag-toronto","12":"tag-toronto-raptors","13":"tag-torontoraptors
["GET
