{"id":695673,"date":"2026-04-03T10:31:40","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T10:31:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/695673\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T10:31:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T10:31:40","slug":"case-against-jb-bickerstaff-re-writes-history-to-screw-him-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/695673\/","title":{"rendered":"Case against JB Bickerstaff re-writes history to screw him over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5i\">JB Bickerstaff should\u00a0probably win\u00a0Coach of the Year for what the Detroit Pistons have done this season, but voters\u00a0seem\u00a0to be\u00a0talking themselves out of it for\u00a0all of\u00a0the wrong reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5l\">The Pistons are cruising towards 60 wins, something that not one person predicted, not even me, Homer #1, who had them finishing 4th\u00a0in the Eastern Conference before the season, so even the most biased, optimistic opinion (mine) was\u00a0way off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5o\">Many predicted a regression for the\u00a0Pistons,\u00a0in fact, ESPN predicted Detroit to win 42 games this season and finish 8th\u00a0in the Eastern Conference. Other sites like Bleacher Report had them at 45 wins and <a href=\"https:\/\/pistonpowered.com\/detroit-pistons-stunning-start-has-shattered-preseason-predictions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had to adjust for a hot start<\/a> no one saw coming.\u00a0In case you were wondering, ESPN had Boston finishing 5th in the East with three more predicted wins than Detroit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5r\">Bickerstaff\u2019s biggest competition comes from Joe\u00a0Mazzulla\u00a0of the Boston Celtics, who led his team to a #2 seed without Jayson Tatum for most of the season.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5u\">While this has been impressive, fans and pundits are ignoring their own words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Can we give JB Bickerstaff a little credit?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"60\">What the Celtics did without Jayson Tatum was\u00a0impressive,\u00a0and\u00a0Mazzulla\u00a0deserves a lot of\u00a0credit, especially since they have had myriad injuries aside from Tatum.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"63\">But they also had another superstar to fall back on in Jaylen Brown, who has put the team on his back, and a better-than-advertised supporting cast. All that said,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0impressive that Boston could finish ahead of New York when the Knicks have been\u00a0relatively healthy\u00a0by\u00a0comparison.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"66\">But\u00a0all of\u00a0these same things could be said about the Pistons (who are ahead of both of them), except they\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have a second superstar to fall back on. All\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0heard all season is how the Pistons\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have a second star, how they need more shooting, how\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0just Cade and a bunch of try-hards, yet the <a href=\"https:\/\/pistonpowered.com\/detroit-pistons-not-paying-attention-any-warning-signs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pistons keep winning without him.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"69\">Detroit has is now 11-4 without Cunningham this season and\u00a0has\u00a0been <a href=\"https:\/\/pistonpowered.com\/cade-cunningham-truth-no-one-wants-say-out-loud-detroit-pistons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better in certain categories <\/a>without him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6c\">They\u2019ve\u00a0also been without Isaiah Stewart for extended\u00a0periods,\u00a0and everyone now magically forgets that\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0had a rotating cast of injuries all season, so much that Daniss Jenkins was thrust into a huge role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6f\">They had the Ivey saga\u00a0to deal\u00a0with, which in retrospect looks like a great bit of locker room management by Bickerstaff, who never let any of it be a distraction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6i\">Everyone is now acting like the Pistons were expected to be where they are, which\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0be\u00a0further from the truth. Not only did\u00a0all of\u00a0the major publications pick them to barely make the\u00a0playoffs, but\u00a0none of them would have dreamed the Pistons would be where they are\u00a0had\u00a0they\u00a0known about the extensive injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6l\">JB Bickerstaff deserves a ton of credit for this, as he has not only held this team together, but has them thriving through adversity and winning without their best player.
