{"id":696161,"date":"2026-04-03T16:41:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T16:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/696161\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T16:41:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T16:41:16","slug":"campbell-coachs-resignation-highlights-ncaa-basketball-spending-gaps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/696161\/","title":{"rendered":"Campbell Coach&#8217;s Resignation Highlights NCAA Basketball Spending Gaps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis week\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/club.sportico.com\/\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/club-sportico\/\" id=\"auto-tag_club-sportico_1\" data-tag=\"club-sportico\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Club Sportico<\/a><\/a>\u00a0column looks at the growing divide in Division I men\u2019s college basketball, where new market forces are further separating the sport\u2019s richest programs from everyone else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat appears clear in recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/march-madness\/\" id=\"auto-tag_march-madness_1\" data-tag=\"march-madness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March Madness<\/a> tournaments, where good teams are winning at historically high rates. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-sportico-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/suxSV-sum-of-sweet-16-team-seeds-by-year-5.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1024\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s also clear in spending. In 2014, the 30 biggest budgets in D-I men\u2019s basketball were on average 13.5x bigger than the 30 smallest. Ten years later, the gap was 16.6x.\u00a0It\u2019s likely even wider today.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-sportico-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/RAHBF-the-spending-gap-in-division-i-men-s-basketball-has-grown-.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"798\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFaced with this reality, some schools are opting to deprioritize basketball. That appears to be the case with the Campbell Fighting Camels, whose head coach just resigned due to lack of resources. St. Bonaventure is also reportedly paying its new coach about half of what it paid his predecessor so it can adapt to the modern realities of college sports without additionally taxing its budget. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStill others are repeating the same tropes that have plagued college sports for more than a decade. In a rant this week about his basketball players, Charleston AD Matt Roberts said, \u201cIf money is your main motivator, you\u2019re not wanted at the College of Charleston.\u201d That came about 24 hours after Roberts hired a new coach away from Akron, a decision that the Akron AD later said was motivated by\u2026 money.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHere is an excerpt of that\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/club.sportico.com\/p\/college-basketball-budgets-di-spending\">essay<\/a> \u270d\ufe0f:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Fighting Camels are a perfect proxy for D-I\u2019s lower class\u2014a school that doesn\u2019t have an FBS football team and spends less on men\u2019s basketball ($2.2 million) than some Final Four players make in\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/why-yaxel-lendeborg-turned-down-184708036.html\">annual NIL money<\/a>. There\u2019s dozens of other Campbells around the country that you\u2019ve likely never heard of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe team caught our attention this week when first-year head coach John Andrzejek resigned via social media. In a long\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CoachAndrzejek\/status\/2039407127421141168\/photo\/1\">post on X<\/a>, Andrzejek said the school had \u201cmade the decision\u201d to deprioritize basketball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDespite months of intense work and collaboration with AD Hannah Bazemore and our terrific athletics administration, and several creative options that were proposed and thoroughly explored, there are no pathways that the institution will support to fund the program appropriately moving forward,\u201d he wrote to fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSimply put\u2014the institution now has different priorities, and they are not compatible with putting the kind of team on the floor that you deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut realistically, what kind of men\u2019s basketball team\u2014and at what cost?\u2014does Campbell University deserve?<br \/>___________________________________________________<br \/>You can read and subscribe to\u00a0Club Sportico\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/club.sportico.com\/\">here<\/a>.
