{"id":696617,"date":"2026-04-03T21:42:27","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T21:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/696617\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T21:42:27","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T21:42:27","slug":"blazers-thorns-business-chamber-and-performance-groups-urge-council-to-kill-ride-hailing-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/696617\/","title":{"rendered":"Blazers, Thorns, Business Chamber and Performance Groups Urge Council to Kill Ride-Hailing Proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Portland Metro Chamber and a coalition that includes Portland professional sports teams and arts groups implored the Portland City Council in a letter today to not to pass a proposed policy that would restrict the portion of a fare that ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft could take from each trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While the two councilors championing the proposal say it will raise drivers\u2019 take-home pay with a greater share of their ride fees, the companies have warned that passing such a policy would steeply increase fares and jeopardize their operations in Portland. Uber has t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/business\/2026\/03\/portland-city-council-wants-to-raise-wages-for-ride-hailing-drivers-uber-says-proposal-could-chase-it-out-of-town.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/business\/2026\/03\/portland-city-council-wants-to-raise-wages-for-ride-hailing-drivers-uber-says-proposal-could-chase-it-out-of-town.html\">hreatened it may leave the city altogether. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Metro Chamber joined forces with a coalition called We Play for Portland, which includes the Portland Trail Blazers, the Portland Timbers, Sport Oregon, Travel Portland, the Oregon Symphony, the Oregon Ballet Theatre and the Portland Opera, to warn the council of what it called \u201cdeep concerns about the unintended consequences these policies could have on Portland\u2019s economy, cultural vitality, and accessibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAt a time when Portland is working to rebuild its economy and restore confidence in downtown and the broader region, policies that risk reducing access to reliable, affordable transportation would move us in the wrong direction,\u201d the April 3 letter reads. \u201cPolicies that significantly increase the cost of rideshare services\u2014or create an environment where companies may reduce service levels or exit the market altogether\u2014pose a direct threat to our city\u2019s transportation ecosystem and to the livelihoods of the group those policies are intended to support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The group said that after a similar proposal passed in Seattle, \u201cprices reportedly rose by approximately 40 percent, and demand dropped sharply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Councilors Steve Novick and Elana Pirtle-Guiney are co-sponsoring the policy, which has not yet made it to the full council for a first or second vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Novick in a phone call with WW said that he stands by the proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cOne of my worries about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wweek.com\/portland\/article-23752-drive.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wweek.com\/portland\/article-23752-drive.html\">letting Uber and Lyft in, in 2014<\/a>, is that gig drivers would be poorly treated and wind up making less than minimum wage. And based on the research we\u2019ve seen, that is what has happened,\u201d Novick says. \u201cI think that\u2019s a problem. We believe in fair wages in Portland, and we want to get fair wages for the Uber and Lyft drivers.\u201d (Novick has said research shows Uber drivers make on average $12 an hour. Lyft has disputed that figure, saying its drivers make closer to $38 per hour.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Novick says Uber\u2019s threat to leave the city is an \u201cinteresting threat\u201d that\u2019s worth noting, but still, he says, \u201cit reminds me of how anytime there\u2019s been a proposal to raise the minimum wage in Oregon, the restaurant association says restaurants will cease to exist in Oregon. And somehow that hasn\u2019t happened.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Pirtle-Guiney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">An Uber spokesman named Zahid Arab on March 26 issued a statement that, should this policy pass, \u201cwe would have to shut down rideshare service in Portland.
