{"id":697002,"date":"2026-04-04T02:05:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T02:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/697002\/"},"modified":"2026-04-04T02:05:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T02:05:17","slug":"jerry-reynolds-on-the-sacramento-kings-nba-draft-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/697002\/","title":{"rendered":"Jerry Reynolds on the Sacramento Kings&#8217; NBA Draft strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"107\" data-end=\"271\">When it comes to the Sacramento Kings\u2019 draft strategy, Jerry Reynolds says the priority should be star power, not roster fit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"107\" data-end=\"271\">During an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/sactownsports.com\/category\/podcast_results\/?i=2220&amp;n=The+Drive+Guys+with+Kevin+Gleason+%26+Allen+Stiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sactown Sports\u2019 The Drive Guys<\/a>, the Sacramento legend joined the show to share his thoughts on a potential franchise-altering offseason for the Kings.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"273\" data-end=\"537\">Sacramento has started to build a solid foundation with \u201creally good players,\u201d but Reynolds made it clear that something is still missing at the top end of the roster.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"273\" data-end=\"537\">The Kings, in his view, lack a true franchise centerpiece\u2014someone who can elevate the team into contention.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"273\" data-end=\"537\">In a loaded 2026 NBA Draft class that includes the likes of Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa, Cameron Boozer, Caleb Wilson, Darius Acuff Jr., and many more, the Sacramento Kings and general manager Scott Perry will have an important decision on their hands in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"539\" data-end=\"797\">\u201cIf you\u2019re in the lottery, you better pick whoever you think is the very best player,\u201d Reynolds said, stressing that the Kings need to aim higher than just filling gaps. \u201cWhat they don\u2019t have is a star, a top guy that could be a top 10 player in the league.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img data-perfmatters-preload=\"\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56514\" class=\" wp-image-56514\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2212444781-612x612-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"SACRAMENTO, CA - MAY 2: Scott Perry and the Sacramento Kings hold a press conference to announce Doug Christie as Head Coach on May 2, 2025 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. With young players already developing across the roster, it might seem logical to avoid redundancy. But Reynolds pointed to history as a warning against that mindset.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1291\">\u201cPortland passed on Michael Jordan because they had Clyde Drexler. The Kings passed on Karl Malone because they had Otis Thorpe,\u201d Reynolds said. \u201cBoth Drexler and Thorpe were terrific players, but they should have taken those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1293\" data-end=\"1394\">The message is unmistakable: never pass on elite talent because of who is already on your roster.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1656\">This becomes especially important when comparing prospects with different profiles\u2014such as a high-upside athlete versus a more polished, NBA-ready contributor. Even if a prospect overlaps with an existing player, Reynolds believes talent should always win out.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1658\" data-end=\"1807\">\u201cIf there\u2019s any one guy\u2026 you\u2019re convinced he\u2019s the best\u2014even though you have a good player at that position\u2014you still should take it,\u201d Reynolds said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"2015\">There is some room for nuance. But even there, Reynolds cautioned against overcorrecting in the draft.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2396\" data-end=\"2523\">\u201cYou can get three-point shooters,\u201d Reynolds said. \u201cDon\u2019t prioritize a specific skill as opposed to passing on a potential star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2525\" data-end=\"2693\">In today\u2019s NBA, role players and specialists can often be acquired through trades or free agency. True stars, however, are far more difficult to find outside the draft.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2695\" data-end=\"2909\">For the Kings, that reality should define their approach.
