It\u2019s unbelievable, the country is not watching the same thing that we get to watch on a daily basis,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ClutchPoints\/status\/2040277999367356661?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Kidd told reporters on Friday<\/a>. \u201cThe things that he\u2019s done, he\u2019s in rare air. He\u2019s with the GOAT when you talk about MJ and what he did in his rookie year, and as a teenager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Flagg is the ninth rookie in <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/\" title=\"NBA\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"214264\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA<\/a> history to post a 50-point game, joining Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Barry, Earl Monroe, Brandon Jennings, Elgin Baylor, Elvin Hayes, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Allen Iverson.<\/p>\n<p>Flagg\u2019s previous career high was 49 points, which was also the previous high in NBA history for a teenager. Notably, Flagg could\u00a0break the record again, as he doesn\u2019t turn 20 until Dec. 21.<\/p>\n<p>Does Flagg\u2019s 50-Point Gem Swing the ROY Race?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5880061\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5880061\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-2258971759-1-e1775282189510.jpg\" alt=\"Cooper Flagg\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5880061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GettyCooper Flagg is in the running for Rookie of the Year<\/p>\n<p>Entering the season, Flagg was a massive favorite to win Rookie of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Not only was he the No. 1 pick last summer, but the former Duke standout figured to get a ton of usage during his rookie campaign.<\/p>\n<p>With Luka Doncic traded away to the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/los-angeles-lakers\/\" title=\"Los Angeles Lakers\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"214263\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>, the Mavericks drafted Flagg to fill its franchise player vacancy.<\/p>\n<p>To win the coveted award, Flagg will have beat out his former Duke teammate, Kon Knueppel, who is enjoying a stellar rookie season in Charlotte.<\/p>\n<p>Knueppel earned Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors for four consecutive months to begin his career. He is the first player in <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/charlotte-hornets\/\" title=\"Hornets\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"214265\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hornets<\/a> history to win Rookie of the Month four times and the first NBA player to do so since Paolo Banchero in 2022-23.<\/p>\n<p>His sharpshooting has been a huge boon for Charlotte, who is on the cusp of their first playoff berth since 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Flagg, meanwhile, has been more statistically productive across the board for a comparatively depleted Mavericks team.<\/p>\n<p>Flagg Could Split Award With Former College Roomie<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5880062\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5880062\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-2264666138-e1775282312703.jpg\" alt=\"Cooper Flagg\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5880062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GettyMavs head coach Jason Kidd won Co-Rookie of the Year in 1994<\/p>\n<p>Despite playing in 11 fewer games this season, one could argue that Flagg has been the more impactful rookie. The talented forward has flashed an ability to takeover games that Knueppel has not yet shown.<\/p>\n<p>Although his odds to win Rookie of the Year has dipped since the beginning of the season, a 50-point showing could swing things back in favor of Flagg.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Flagg could follow in the footsteps of his head coach Jason Kidd, who was named Co-Rookie of the Year alongside Grant Hill in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d love to see another co-Rookie of the Year like we did back in the days with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hillgr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=dallashoopsjournal.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-02_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener external\">Grant Hill<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0J-Kidd,\u201d Nowitzki said at a charity event. \u201cBoth had an incredible year. To me, when it\u2019s all said and done, [Flagg] has a higher ceiling.
