The struggling company, rebuilt from the remnants of its predecessor Diamond Sports Group after a lengthy bankruptcy, appeared headed for collapse when reports emerged last December that it had missed rights payments to franchises.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6c\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/cavaliers\/onsi\/news\/cavs-coach-kenny-atkinson-explains-why-max-strus-will-play-key-role-in-playoffs-01kn9k0kpnbw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Cavaliers are one of 13 teams<\/a>, along with six NHL clubs, that will be scrambling for local broadcast partners for next season.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6f\">The Hawks, Hornets, Pistons, Pacers, Clippers, Grizzlies, Heat, Bucks, Timberwolves, Thunder, Magic, and Spurs are the other NBA teams included.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6i\">Tom Friend of Sports Business Journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/04\/02\/main-street-sports-will-officially-wind-down-this-month-nba-teams-can-seek-new-tv-deals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">broke the news of the wind-down on Thursday.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Main Street Sports Group officially shuttering this month, 13 NBA teams become local TV free agents <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kdWrILM2Oh\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/kdWrILM2Oh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/awfulannouncing\/status\/2039848912312205392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 2, 2026<\/a>What are the NBA doing <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6r\">Anticipating that Main Street Sports Group would wind down operations after the current season, the NBA had been aiming to fast-track a centralized local broadcast package, one that would combine the in-market rights of many of the league\u2019s 30 teams into a single product to sell to a streaming platform. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6u\">However, according to a report from Sports Business Journal on Thursday, that package is now more likely to debut in the 2027\u201328 season, forcing teams to secure one-year stopgap deals for next year.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6x\">As a result, the league is reportedly encouraging teams to sign only one-year agreements, or at least include opt-out clauses after a year, for the upcoming season. Ideally, the NBA hopes to line up 20 or more teams before bringing the package to market. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"70\">The report notes that platforms such as YouTube TV would only be interested if the package includes at least 20 teams.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"73\">The rights fees are expected to come in below $10 million per year, with many teams likely to pivot to local over-the-air broadcasters or even begin to launch their own in-house networks, such as the Cavaliers\u2019 Rock Entertainment Sports Network.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"76\">According to Sports Business Journal, none of the 13 NBA teams or seven NHL teams affiliated with Main Street have received local media rights payments in 2026.
