data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215401\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>, with <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Austin Reaves\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/austin-reaves\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215404\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Austin Reaves<\/a> now ruled out for the remainder of the regular season.<\/p>\n<p>Reaves has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique injury, with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShamsCharania\/status\/2040538451817140377?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">ESPN\u2019s Shams Charania<\/a> reporting a recovery timeline of four to six weeks.<\/p>\n<p>He joins <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Luka Doncic\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/luka-doncic\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215405\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luka Doncic<\/a> on the sidelines after the Slovenian was <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShamsCharania\/status\/2040187516754518125?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">previously ruled out<\/a> \u201cindefinitely\u201d with a left hamstring injury.<\/p>\n<p>The Lakers had been building strong momentum to close the season, winning 16 of their last 19 games, but their outlook now appears far more uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Lakers Facing Uncertainty as Injuries Shift Focus Toward Offseason<\/p>\n<p>Both Doncic and Reaves are expected to remain sidelined well into the playoffs, placing the Lakers\u2019 postseason hopes in serious doubt.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, attention is already beginning to shift toward the offseason.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the possibility of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/47949695\/why-los-angeles-lakers-quiet-nba-trade-deadline-explosive-offseason-lebron-james-luka-doncic-giannis-antetkounmpo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">significant cap space<\/a>, with several contracts coming off the books, most notably <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/lebron-james\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LeBron James<\/a>\u2019 $52.6 million salary, expectations of major roster changes have been tempered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.ph\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/48323320\/next-lebron-nba-insiders-lakers-warriors-cavs-free-agency-options\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">ESPN\u2019s Dave McMenamin<\/a> recently reported that the Lakers are not expected to aggressively pursue another star outside of James.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the organization is expected to prioritize using its cap space to retain key contributors such as Reaves, <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Jaxson Hayes\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/jaxson-hayes\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215408\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jaxson Hayes<\/a>, and <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Luke Kennard\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/luke-kennard\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215403\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Kennard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>James returning on a reduced deal remains a possibility, as does a new contract for <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Rui Hachimura\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/rui-hachimura\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215406\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rui Hachimura<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the NBA Draft presents a <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/los-angeles-lakers\/maleek-thomas-lakers-mock-draft\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cost-effective path<\/a> for the Lakers to strengthen the roster while maintaining long-term flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles currently holds its 2026 first-round pick and is projected to select toward the end of the round.<\/p>\n<p>In his latest mock draft, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/nba\/article\/nba-mock-draft-where-aj-dybantsa-cameron-boozer-darryn-peterson-and-other-top-prospects-could-land-150410715.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Yahoo! Sports\u2019 Kevin O\u2019Connor<\/a> has the Lakers selecting Duke center Patrick Ngongba with the 26th overall pick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNgongba does the dirty work without complaining about it: set screens, run the floor, make the right read, protect the rim and do it all again the next play and the one after that,\u201d O\u2019Connor wrote. \u201cNgongba did it as the backbone of one of the best teams in the country before a foot issue derailed the end of his season, which played a factor in Duke\u2019s inability to reach the Final Four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Ngongba Emerging as Late First-Round Option for Lakers<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had two screws placed in his right foot during high school, then had lingering issues in his left foot as a freshman before his right foot became an issue again as a sophomore,\u201d O\u2019Connor added. \u201cThose injuries are why Ngongba could be available at the end of the first round.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through 32 games this season, Ngongba <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/player\/stats\/_\/id\/4873209\/patrick-ngongba-ii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">averaged<\/a> 10.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.1 blocks while shooting 60.6% from the field and 25.8% from three-point range.<\/p>\n<p>After playing a limited role as a freshman, Ngongba has taken on increased responsibility following the departure of former Duke center <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Khaman Maluach\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nba\/player\/khaman-maluach\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215409\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Khaman Maluach<\/a>, who was selected 10th in the 2025 <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"NBA\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nba\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215402\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA<\/a> Draft.<\/p>\n<p>That expanded role has allowed the 20-year-old to establish himself as a more consistent contributor and elevate his draft stock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNgongba has turned into a weirdly polarizing player for scouts, with some very strongly appreciating his well-rounded game on both ends and thinking it will translate exceedingly well,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7043867\/2026\/03\/02\/nba-mock-draft-players-dybantsa-peterson-boozer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">The Athletic\u2019s Sam Vecenie<\/a> wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Ngongba\u2019s combination of size, passing ability, and defensive instincts has kept him firmly in late first-round discussions and could address a Lakers frontcourt that has lacked long-term stability in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The Lakers could also explore using their 2026 first-round pick in a trade for an established player.
