PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers fell short to the Detroit Pistons<\/a> on Saturday night 116-93 as they were swept by the No. 1 seed in the East in their 4-game season series. The Sixers had their chances to pick up wins over the Pistons earlier in the season as they held leads in the first two matchups between the teams, but Detroit proved its toughness and mettle in the end.<\/p>\n

The Pistons are a physical bunch who knows who they are and rely on that identity to get the job done on a nightly basis. It’s why they clinched the 1 seed for the first time since 2007 with that win on Saturday. Detroit has a lot of tough-minded players who will bother any team on a nightly basis.<\/p>\n

“They play hard,” Tyrese Maxey said after the loss. “They play the right way. Today was the first game\u2014well, I didn’t play last game\u2014but the first game that I played where they kind of jumped on us early, they kind of gave it to us early. The first two games, we played them really good. We was up in the fourth quarter and we really should have won the game, but they’re definitely a good team. They play hard, they right the right way, they play together. Well coached.”<\/p>\n

Neither team really saw each other at full strength. The Pistons were missing star guard Cade Cunningham in two of the matchups and a number of other key pieces while the Sixers didn’t have Joel Embiid for any of the four matchups and only had Paul George for one of those matchups.<\/p>\n

“Obviously, with us, it\u2019s just been a bunch of different inconsistency with lineups,” said VJ Edgecombe. “So I mean, obviously they’re really good team, a really disciplined team. So, it’s tough. I’ll be honest, it’s tough sometimes, especially when you have different lineups, different times. One game was played without four of us. They’ve also been playing games without Cade.”<\/p>\n

Therefore, it’s hard for either team to really get a read on one another, but in the end, the Sixers have to understand they must be better against Detroit in the future.<\/p>\n

“That’s no excuse, to be honest,” Edgecombe added. “It’s just there’s got to be better. It\u2019s just little things. We just let little leads slip away and slip away. We got to just be able to be better when it comes to capitalizing.”<\/p>\n

George was seeing the Pistons for the first time. He faced a lot of pressure in the second half after he started the game on a heater. He had 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting in the first half, but then only had two points on 1-for-7 shooting in the second half.<\/p>\n

“They really challenged us on offense, getting up into us, crowding us, denying the ball, pressuring up, loading the paint,” George explained. “I thought they did a really good job of kind of doing everything tonight. That was really the game.”<\/p>\n

Philadelphia gave up 71 points in the first half, but then limited Detroit after halftime. The opportunity was there for the Sixers to salvage a game with the Pistons, but Detroit’s defense was just too much.<\/p>\n

“We played pretty good defense,” George finished. “They had a lot of actions that was challenging the guard, but I thought we played pretty good defense for the most part. We just couldn’t come up with rebounds on a lot of them, and they were able to get second opportunities, but outside of that, I think it’s just defensively.
