Colin Mitchell\u2019s putback in the final second Sunday gave Mary Washington its first NCAA Division III men\u2019s basketball championship with a 75-73 victory over Emory.<\/p>\n
In a clash of Eagles at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, UMW went on a 14-2 run to build a 13-point lead. UMW (30-3) was ranked fifth nationally before the 64-team tournament began.<\/p>\n
Second-ranked Emory (27-4), also seeking its first title, erased the deficit when Ethan Fauss sank his sixth 3-pointer of the game with 12 seconds left. UMW held for the final shot, which first-team All-American Kye Robinson missed on an airball. But Mitchell banked in a short follow shot as the clock struck zeroes, igniting a celebration from the Fredericksburg squad.<\/p>\n
Robinson led UMW with 27 points, while Jay Randall added 14 and Kaden Bates 10. Oscar Smith High graduate Ulysses Young had three points in 23 minutes, hitting a trey.<\/p>\n
Fauss and Jair Knight led Emory, located in Atlanta, with 24 points each. National Player of the Year Ben Pearce, who struggled with an injury, had 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds.<\/p>\n
Gannon takes D-II title<\/p>\n
In the game immediately before Mary Washington\u2019s in Indianapolis, Pace Prosser totaled 28 points and 11 rebounds as Gannon beat Lander 84-61 to win the Division II championship.<\/p>\n
Second-year coach Easton Bazzoli led Gannon to the title three years after a three-win season.<\/p>\n
Prosser made 10 of 19 shots, including four 3-pointers, for the Golden Knights (34-3) of Erie, Pennsylvania, in a clash between two teams aiming for a first national championship. Prosser added five assists and five steals.<\/p>\n
Lucas Sekasi finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Mackenzie Morgan added 12 points and seven rebounds, while his twin brother, Lucas, scored 11.<\/p>\n
