{"id":701927,"date":"2026-04-06T19:41:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T19:41:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/701927\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T19:41:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T19:41:26","slug":"uconn-prepares-for-ncaa-championship-celebrations-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/701927\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn prepares for NCAA championship celebrations on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Connecticut has taken safety precautions such as removing some lampposts and street signs to protect the Storrs campus ahead of the men\u2019s basketball national championship game Monday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Student celebrations after the men\u2019s team won previous championships led to costly damage on campus. In 2023, students knocked down lampposts and street signs and damaged school buildings and property, amounting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcconnecticut.com\/investigations\/uconn-championship-win-celebrations-resulted-in-costly-property-damage-auditors-say\/3056076\/#:~:text=UConn%20championship%20win%20celebrations%20resulted,fact%20the%20costliest%20vandalism%20expense.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">$123,000 in property damage.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ctmirror.org\/2023\/04\/05\/ct-uconn-arrests-vandalism-campus-national-champions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fifteen students were arrested <\/a>and 16 were hospitalized.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the destruction in 2023, UConn took steps toward increasing security measures and protecting campus property the following year. That proved somewhat effective \u2014 student celebrations in 2024 wasn\u2019t as destructive, though <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycampus.com\/2024\/04\/10\/six-arrested-as-thousands-of-uconn-students-celebrate-ncaa-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">five students were arrested<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mike Enright, the deputy spokesperson for UConn, said school staff removed lampposts this year on Hillside Road and Jim Calhoun Way as a \u201cproactive way of preventing possible vandalism that could result from the celebration of tonight\u2019s games.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an email, Enright said removing lampposts ahead of anticipated celebrations has worked well, \u201calong with an increased security presence and student messaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senior Maya Lanzisera has experienced a national championship win every year she has been a UConn student.\u00a0She said she remembers her first year and that while it was fun and filled with excitement, it was not the safest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople went wild, lots of trees on the ground, shattering windows\u2026 things set on fire,\u201d Lanzisera said. \u201cIf there was something in the ground and they could remove it, it was removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The university has sent out several messages to students encouraging everyone to celebrate responsibly this year \u2014 should the Huskies win the championship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo student should endanger their UConn career, their future, themselves, and others by making poor choices that they will quickly come to regret,\u201d university communications wrote in an email message sent to all undergraduates on April 3.\u00a0\u201cThe eyes of the whole state and the nation will be on UConn. Our teams have earned our pride; let\u2019s all make sure that we earn theirs by being respectful of one another and this community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Credit: AJ Mast \/ AP Photo<\/p>\n<p>As UConn faces Michigan on Monday night, the championship game makes it the men\u2019s team\u2019s third championship appearance in four years. This year, UConn was the only school to have both the <a href=\"https:\/\/ctmirror.org\/2026\/04\/03\/heres-another-way-uconns-basketball-teams-are-making-history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">women and men\u2019s basketball teams<\/a> make it to the Final Four. The women\u2019s team lost the semi final game 62-48 against South Carolina on Friday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter you have had three straight years of excellence in winning championships, it\u2019s not even I hope this will happen, it\u2019s almost like it will be crazier if it didn\u2019t,\u201d Lanzisera said. \u201cI am really hoping for those perfect four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Robert Lycoudes said, \u201cI am kind of sad the women lost this year but I am hoping the men can pull out a win tonight.\u201d Lycoudes said he plans on watching the game tonight at Huskies or Square Peg, two bars close to campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UConn will be hosting watch parties for students Monday night on the Storrs campus at the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium at the Rizza Performance Center and the Toscano Family Ice Forum. Students could claim free tickets ahead of time to attend.<\/p>\n<p>In past years, watch parties have been held at Gampel Pavilion.
