After a thrilling 108-105 road victory over the Atlanta Hawks on April 6, Towns stepped in front of the microphone and delivered one of his most pointed, detailed breakdowns of what this Knicks team needs to do when the postseason finally arrives. With the playoffs just days away, his words carry real weight.

When asked what the keys were to this team achieving playoff success, Towns was quite clear. He went straight into detail, delivering a message that sounded less like media speak and more like a locker-room speech:

“We got to execute for 48. We got to have better starts. We got to maximize our defensive integrity. You know, we’re playing defense at a high level, our offense gets going, we get those transition points, and we get the crowd and ourselves into the game. So I think if we could really just focus on those things, I think we could beat any team in the league on any night.”

Karl-Anthony Towns was motivated to execute and get the win in Atlanta for his grandmother in the building and his father watching at home! 🙌
@NYKnicks | #NewYorkForever

That‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ kind of determination is precisely the type of thing Knicks fans have been longing to hear.

Right now, the Knicks are in third place, and if things go smoothly, they’re likely to maintain that position heading into the playoffs.

Towns On Controlling the Chaos

Earlier in the post-game interview, Towns was asked how he manages the emotional swings of a nerve-wracking game. He answered:

“Man, just discipline, execution, experience. Damn, tonight reminded me a little bit of last year, man. We found a way to get it done. That team is really good, man. They’re gonna be a problem for whoever they play in the playoffs. But, man, tonight was ours. We found a way to get it done. We found a way to execute in the end. We found a way to stop the bleeding. They’re a hell of a team — super talented. Nickeil Alexander-Walker — of course, I know him now from Minnesota. I know what he could do. But this was a team effort. We found a way.”

The mention of‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Alexander-Walker was not only a compliment but also an acknowledgment of the type of individual brilliance that the Knicks had to hold down the stretch.

KAT Delivers When It Counts

Karl Anthony Towns vs Hawks

Towns has done exactly what we need from him. He was being consistent in the game. He scored 21 points on a good 9-of-12 shooting from the field, grabbed 12 rebounds, and gave out 6 assists with two steals and a block.

KAT demonstrated the two-way effort and finishing skill that make him such a nightmare matchup in playoff situations. He finished the game at +2, a subtle yet consistent sign of his overall influence on offense and ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌defense.

Jalen Brunson And OG Anunoby Against Hawks

Brunson, as he so often does, shouldered the offensive load with authority. He poured in 30 points on 13 assists, orchestrating the offense for 39 minutes and keeping the Knicks calm when Atlanta threatened to take control. OG continued his elite two-way play with 22 points, 4-of-10 from three, and a team-best +10 rating.

 Jayesh Pagar Jayesh Pagar is a writer at Heavy Sports, covering the New York Knicks and other NBA teams.
