This is not about wins and losses. This is not even just about the Phoenix Suns. This is about the NBA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">This is about a billion-dollar product that a lot of us pay a lot of money to watch. This is about a league which claims to \u201cencourage[e] communication, dialogue[,] and transparency with NBA fans\u2026\u201d while showing little to no effort to meet such a goal. But it is becoming clear to me that this may not be an issue if Adam Silver actually put competent leadership in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Let\u2019s also be clear that these failures of NBA executives are not a new development. Not at all. The NBA\u2019s leadership void has persisted for years \u2013 and evidence suggests the problem is only becoming exacerbated.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with Kathy Behrens<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Behrens is the Executive Vice President of Social Responsibility and Player Programs for the NBA. According to her bio, she \u201coversees a group that manages all of the NBA\u2019s programs that coordinate league and player social responsibility efforts, support player growth and development, and enhance the marketing opportunities for current and former players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">For instance, after Draymond Green punched Jusuf Nurkic on December 13, 2023, the NBA suspended him indefinitely, and Behrens played a role in regular \u201ccheck-in calls\u201d with Green before he was allowed to return from suspension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Sounds like Behrens is a real difference-maker in a positive way, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">That might be the case if you are able to ignore the fact that Kathy Behrens enabled Green\u2019s violent behavior before finally seeing what the rest of the world had seen for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Let\u2019s go back to October 5, 2022, when Draymond Green attacked his teammate, Jordan Poole, during a Golden State Warriors team practice. Frankly, my legal background made it an intriguing situation, so I reached out to Behrens via email, asking why the NBA had not issued any discipline to Green. So, I asked Behrens if she could clarify the \u201csufficient\u201d discipline that the Warriors had levied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">In response, Behrens stated, \u201cThe warriors suspended him and it was made public\u2026\u201d and that the NBA believes that \u201cwas the right outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"_1eezmj01\" href=\"https:\/\/platform.brightsideofthesun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/45\/2026\/04\/KB2.png?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" data-pswp-height=\"480\" data-pswp-width=\"844\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\"><img alt=\"\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\" class=\"w91vxg0\" _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The problem with Behrens\u2019 statement, however, is that public reports stated that Green \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/sports\/warriors-reveal-draymond-greens-punishment-for-punching-jordan-poole\/article_bc275f62-4a3f-11ed-beaa-6fbf6dde944e.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was fined but not suspended<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">I pointed this out to Behrens, and she changed her response to me: \u201cDraymond was kept out of practice for a number of days and then fined by the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"_1eezmj01\" href=\"https:\/\/platform.brightsideofthesun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/45\/2026\/04\/KB3.png?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" data-pswp-height=\"1092\" data-pswp-width=\"1528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\"><img alt=\"\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\" class=\"w91vxg0\" _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">I followed up and asked Behrens how Green\u2019s actions and the NBA\u2019s response fit within the league\u2019s social responsibility principles \u2013 what did that result in?<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"_1eezmj01\" href=\"https:\/\/platform.brightsideofthesun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/45\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-04-at-8.53.37AM.png?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;crop=0,0,100,100\" data-pswp-height=\"1116\" data-pswp-width=\"1200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\"><img alt=\"\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\" conduct falls within the purview of her job, Behrens blocks me.One year later, Green attacks Nukic in the middle of a game and THEN the NBA \u2013 and Behrens \u2013 decide something needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">What took Behrens so long to take action against Green?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Why did Behrens not even know what discipline \u2013 if any \u2013 was levied the first time around?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Why would Behrens block someone for asking about the NBA\u2019s role in social responsibility?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">All signs point to complete ineptitude in her role. Nothing more, nothing less.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s move on to officiating \u2013 and the man responsible for NBA officials \u2013 Albert Sanders, Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Sanders is the NBA\u2019s Executive Vice President, Head of Referee Operations. You can learn more about him in this lovely <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DanWoikeSports\/status\/1872048440156524948?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">puff piece written by Dan Woike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">According to Woike, Sanders took his job with the NBA \u201c[b]ecause the rules matter.\u201d Which is ironic, considering the fact that Sanders\u2019 officials consistently fail to enforce the rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Now, before diving deep into the failures of Sanders and his officials, let\u2019s provide some context for these referees. NBA referees are touted as being the best of the best. That, presumably, is why they are paid between $250,000 and $550,000 per year. They are paid very well to perform in a high-profile job in \u2013 as referenced above \u2013 a billion-dollar industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">This, of course, makes their constant failures \u2013 and the lack of any discipline or transparency from Sanders \u2013 particularly frustrating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Now, I could post video after video of NBA officials missing calls, but that does not seem productive. Even the most egregious misses, in theory, can be explained by the game speed, angles, etc. So, for purposes of this article, we\u2019ll give officials the benefit of the doubt for on-floor calls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Let\u2019s focus on more objective standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">First, the pool reports that are done by NBA officials after certain games and numerous instances where NBA referees have provided explanations\/answers to pool questions that are inconsistent with the NBA Rulebook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Why focus on that? Because these are irrefutable instances where NBA referees demonstrate a complete lack of understanding when it comes to the NBA Rulebook \u2013 a circumstance that, for individuals being paid as much as they are and who are as imperative to the game as they are, should be unacceptable to Albert Sanders, Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">On January 10, 2026, Jason Kidd was ejected from a game between the Chicago Bulls and the Dallas Mavericks, which the Bulls ended up winning, 125-107. After the game, Crew Chief Scott Foster (his existence in the NBA is an entirely different story\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightsideofthesun.com\/2021\/7\/12\/22574174\/phoenix-suns-nba-finals-got-fostered-in-milwaukee-or-did-they\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quite literally<\/a>) was asked by a pool reporter the basis for the ejection. Foster\u2019s response: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/official.nba.com\/pool-report-from-tonights-mavericks-at-bulls-game\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He used profanity toward an official on two separate occasions and was given a technical foul for each occasion<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">In the NBA Rulebook, can profanity lead to a technical foul? Objectively, Scott Foster\u2019s response to the pool reporter\u2019s question is inconsistent with the NBA Rulebook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">While Scott Foster may have been besties with Tim Donaghy and, therefore, of questionable ethical makeup in the first place, he has been an NBA referee for more than 30 years, and his inability to grasp the rules is inexcusable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">In any other workplace, such incompetence would not be tolerated. In the NBA, it seems as though it is almost celebrated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">You all may recall this one. On December 14, 2025, LeBron James manhandled a referee in a game against the Phoenix Suns and what came of it? Zero. Nothing. Zilch. Nada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">And why was that, you may ask?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Well, according to Tyler Ford (I know, I know\u2026), \u201cDuring instant replay review, we have the ability to review all unsportsmanlike acts. In reality, however, LeBron should have been assessed a technical foul for contacting a game official. Tyler Ford\u2019s explanation indicates that either (1) he expressly ignores the NBA Rulebook and calls games on his own prerogative (which is not entirely out of the question), or (2) he does not know the NBA Rulebook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Either way, Ford\u2019s nonsensical explanation is another demonstration of Albert Sanders, Jr.\u2019s failures as an NBA executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">OK\u2026this one is not from a pool report, but it is equally objective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">How many times have we seen a referee allow a challenge by an opposing team after a member of the Phoenix Suns has already been given the ball at the free throw line?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Well, guess what? But, of course, Ford has already demonstrated his inability to grasp the rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">At the point where Acosta releases the ball to give to Devin Booker, there is no longer the ability to challenge the call. Objectively, that is what the NBA Rulebook says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">So, again, why this error? Incompetence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">And it all starts at the top with Albert Sanders, Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">While we are at it, it bears noting that this has happened to the Phoenix Suns at least three times this season \u2013 and at least twice to Devin Booker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">So, if the NBA is becoming less watchable for you, these are two individuals who can carry a large load of the blame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Lastly, I will note that I reached out to Behrens, Sanders, and even Sanders\u2019 boss, Byron Spruell, about these issues. Perhaps not surprisingly, I received no response. Which begs the question: why is the NBA so scared of transparency? Why would Behrens, Sanders, and Spruell not want to demonstrate that the NBA operates with integrity?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Their silence provides all the answers I need.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But, hey\u2026maybe I\u2019m wrong about everything.
