Outside of Westbrook, the Kings don’t have a player on the roster with a proven track record as an NBA starting point guard.

Nunes pointed out that relying on internal options isn’t enough, noting, “If you’re going into the year with Killian Hayes as your starting point guard, that’s concerning. Devin Carter, you don’t feel like it’s in that spot. Nique Clifford is more of a complementary playmaker.”

That reality puts pressure on Sacramento’s decision-makers to address the position through either the draft or free agency. While landing a rookie guard is one path, Nunes emphasized the importance of veteran stability alongside any young addition.

“Even if they do draft a point guard, it’s a rookie point guard… I think veteran guys like that matter,” he explained, referencing how De’Aaron Fox benefited from experienced guards early in his career.

Beyond the point guard issue, the Kings also face questions about the overall direction of their roster, one that could be impacted by securing a high pick in a loaded 2026 NBA Draft. Still, the lack of a floor general remains the most glaring weakness.

As Nunes summed it up, “To me, it’s draft, coaching, and then we’re going to be right back to not having a starting point guard going into next year.”

For a team trying to establish identity and consistency, solving that problem could define the entire offseason—and ultimately determine whether Sacramento takes a step forward heading into 2026-27.

Listen to and watch Sactown Sports’ The Matt & Kayla Show with Matt George & Kayla Anderson, airing weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. PT on Sactown Sports.

More Sacramento Kings content from Sactown Sports

When is the next Sacramento Kings game?

The Sacramento Kings will travel down I-80 to visit Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night.

Sacramento and Golden State have split two regular-season matchups thus far, with the Warriors handing the Kings a 137-103 loss at Chase Center on January 9th behind 27 points and 10 assists from Curry.

Be sure to catch all of the Sacramento Kings vs. Golden State Warriors action right here on Sactown Sports 1140 AM, with pregame coverage beginning at 5:30 PM PT on Game Night before a 7:00 pm PT tip-off from downtown San Francisco.

Upcoming Sacramento Kings schedule for the 2025-26 season

Tuesday, April 7th @ Golden State Warriors – 7:00 PM PT
Friday, April 10th vs. Golden State Warriors – 7:00 PM PT
Sunday, April 12th @ Portland Trail Blazers – 5:30 PM PT (End of season)

Thank you for reading SactownSports.com.
