Victor Wembanyama knows the stakes in the San Antonio Spurs’ NBA Cup Final rematch against the New York Knicks, despite new injury updates. <\/p>\n

Going into the Wednesday night matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers<\/a> on April 8, the San Antonio Spurs had some major question marks due to their injury report.<\/p>\n

The biggest concern for the Spurs was the availability of Victor Wembanyama.<\/p>\n

As the Spurs battled against the Philadelphia 76ers<\/a> at the start of the week, Wembanyama\u2019s night ended after a little over 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

The star center was ruled out due to a rib injury. After undergoing thorough testing on Tuesday, the Spurs were relieved to find out that Wembanyama wasn\u2019t dealing with anything major.<\/p>\n

However, the Spurs couldn\u2019t clear Wembanyama to take the court right away.<\/p>\n

Against the Blazers, the big man was ruled out. Before the game, the head coach, Mitch Johnson, addressed the state of Wembanyama.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s improved quite a bit,\u201d Johnson told reporters. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s a long-term concern, but we\u2019ll obviously be very cautious with the situation and circumstances we\u2019re under. \u2026 We\u2019ll just kind of take it day by day and see how it goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

via Jared Weiss, The Athletic<\/a>: Mitch Johnson says Wemby is improving and there are no major concerns about his rib contusion, but wouldn\u2019t say if Victor will play Friday.<\/p>\n

The Spurs started backup center Luke Kornet in Wembanyama\u2019s place on Wednesday night. When they get done with the Blazers, the Spurs will begin thinking about Wembanyama\u2019s status for the Friday night game on April 10, against the San Antonio Spurs.<\/p>\n

Clearly, the Spurs can\u2019t commit to Wembanyama\u2019s availability in that one.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama is the head of the snake in San Antonio. He is the difference-maker for a team that hopes to compete for a championship.<\/p>\n

As much as Wembanyama wants his personal accolades, the Spurs need to make sure he\u2019s protected for the NBA<\/a> Playoffs.<\/p>\n

This season, Wembanyama has appeared in 63 games for the Spurs. He is making 51.0% of his shots from the field and knocking down 35.0% of his shots from three. The veteran is producing 24.8 points per game.<\/p>\n

Along with his scoring, Wembanyama is averaging a double-double by coming down with 11.5 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.1 blocks per game.<\/p>\n

If Wembanyama doesn\u2019t get the nod to play on Friday, he\u2019ll have one more shot to take the court before the playoffs on Sunday, April 12, against the Denver Nuggets<\/a>.<\/p>\n
