Curry did not suit up, as Golden State continued to manage his return from a knee injury, leaving a highly anticipated matchup on hold.

Even without both stars sharing the floor, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr delivered a clear explanation for why both players continue to perform at elite levels so deep into their careers.

“Steph has the greatest hand-eye coordination I think anybody on earth, and LeBron is probably the greatest athlete, physical specimen that I’ve ever seen,” Kerr said. “There’s a reason they’re both still going.”

Kerr Points to Unique Traits Behind Longevity

Kerr’s comments highlighted the defining traits that continue to separate Curry and James from the rest of the league. Curry’s coordination fuels his shooting accuracy and movement, while James still leans on a rare combination of power, speed, and endurance.

Those qualities showed again Thursday through James’ performance. In his 23rd season and at age 41, he controlled the pace, created opportunities for teammates, and delivered in key moments. The Lakers needed that presence as they worked to stabilize their position in the Western Conference playoff race.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak and helped Los Angeles keep pace in a tight race for home-court advantage. Injuries to key contributors had created uncertainty, but James helped reset the tone.

“We just had a sour taste in our mouths,” James said. “None of us wants to continue to lose… just trying to figure out how we can be great as a team and get a win.”

While James carried the spotlight, Curry’s absence still shaped the night.

Curry’s Absence Highlights Bigger Picture

Golden State ruled Curry out of its regular-season home finale at Chase Center as part of injury management. He recently returned after missing significant time with a knee issue, and the team chose not to push him in a back-to-back setting.

Kerr emphasized that the decision came down strictly to health, NBC reports.

“It was a hundred percent health related,” Kerr said. “If we were making decisions on those criteria, we would have played him tonight. But this was about his health and recovery… this made the most sense.”

The absence hit fans hard, especially those who traveled long distances hoping to see Curry in person. Some held signs expressing disappointment when it became clear he would not take the court.

Still, Golden State’s priorities have shifted. The team sits locked into the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference, meaning its focus now centers on the upcoming play-in tournament. Preserving Curry’s availability for those games carries far more weight than one regular-season appearance.

Before the game, Curry and James shared a brief moment, greeting each other as longtime rivals and contemporaries. Even as opportunities to see them compete head-to-head become less frequent, their impact remains undeniable.

Kerr’s message made that clear. Their greatness is not fading. It continues, driven by traits few players in league history have ever possessed.

Burtland Dixon Burtland Dixon is a sports journalist covering the NBA and athlete culture for Heavy.com.
