In a surprising twist, Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra went out of his way to defend LaMelo Ball against critics demanding he gets punished for injuring Bam Adebayo. The Charlotte Hornets got past Miami in the first play-in game, but many Heat fans are livid about Adebayo getting injured from an allegedly “dirty” play from Ball. Spoelstra called out LaMelo after the game, but he defended Ball today after more criticism was thrown at him.

The following quote saw the Miami coach being more forgiving about LaMelo:

“I didn’t think that he needed to be penalized more moving forward. I don’t think that would make sense. I don’t think he’s a dirty player. I just think, in that moment, all things can be true. It was a dirty play and a dangerous play. It should have been caught at that moment. But it wasn’t and then, you know, you move on.”

Ball has received a lot of negative attention from the basketball media and fan base for grabbing Adebayo’s leg to cause that injury. However, Spoelstra decided to speak up for LaMelo today and stated he doesn’t believe the point guard is a dirty player. Ball badly needed someone from Miami to vouch for him to stop the negative momentum.

NBA Doesn’t Believe LaMelo Is A Dirty Player

The most important thing about Spoelstra’s comment is that he doesn’t believe LaMelo is a dirty player, despite having the most reason to believe it. Other claims of Ball doing questionable things that could have hurt others led to his reputation spiraling overnight.

However, the NBA did not suspend LaMelo in a scenario where they would have punished a player with a negative track record. Draymond Green and Dillon Brooks would likely be suspended if they caused an opposing player to get hurt in a similar fashion due to their history.

Ball benefited from not having too many scenarios that the league holds against him. Spoelstra backed up what the NBA believes that LaMelo may do some questionable things, but he doesn’t deserve to get the “dirty” player reputation based on a mistake in the moment.

Pressure On LaMelo Ball To Make Playoffs

Ball is one of the longest tenured players in the NBA today to never play an NBA Playoff game. Charlotte must defeat the Orlando Magic in the last play-in game to capture the eighth seed and finally get an official series from the LaMelo era.

The controversial play against Bam in a negative context and the game-winning basket in a positive context each put Ball’s name in the news. Charlotte’s success or failure on Friday will come from how LaMelo leads them in a must-win spot to pay off a great season.

Ball must deliver a strong performance and remind the world of his greatness to get past the “dirty” player talk. Hornets’ fans have been waiting a full decade to return to the playoffs and have a young exciting roster. LaMelo must lead them to one more victory or risk getting negative reactions for losing with the spotlight now on him.

Joey Haverford Joey Haverford is a seasoned sports content writer with over 12 years of experience.
