Facing off in the 1 vs. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference, the Orlando Magic will challenge the Detroit Pistons. The Magic officially punched their ticket to the playoffs by winning the play-in matchup over the Hornets, while the Pistons led the Eastern Conference from wire-to-wire this season.

You can check out a preview for the full Magic vs. Pistons series on DraftKings Network here.

Looking at the odds for the Game 1 matchup, the Pistons enter as 8.5-point favorites and hold -375 odds of winning outright on DraftKings Sportsbook. They took the all-in swing to trade for Desmond Bane this summer with the intentions of this catapulting them up the Eastern Conference. Ultimately, they finished as the eighth seed during the regular season with a 45-37 overall record. Orlando lost to the 76ers in the first play-in matchup, but blew out the Hornets to earn the postseason opportunity. On the season, the Magic went 39-45 against the spread, and the game total has gone 44-40 to the over/under.

Jonathan Isaac is listed as questionable with a left knee sprain, while Wendell Carter Jr. is considered available on the injury report. Paolo Banchero still headlines the production, averaging 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game. Franz Wagner has battled injury issues all year, but contributes 20.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. Desmond Bane has stepped up as a leader and is necessary to space the floor, adding 20.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists while shooting 39.1% on three-point attempts. Anthony Black has enjoyed a breakout season, while the likes of Jalen Suggs, Tristan da Silva, and Goga Bitadze play key roles as well.

Jamahl Mosley’s squad averages 115.7 points per game, which ranks 15th in the league in scoring. They also rank 19th in offensive rating, 21st in field goal percentage, and 27th in three-point percentage. Defensively, opponents are scoring 115.1 points per game against Orlando, which ranks 13th in the league. The Magic also rank 11th in defensive rating, 19th in opponents’ field goal percentage, and 11th in opponents’ three-point percentage.

The Detroit Pistons took a leap forward this season, becoming legitimate title threats. After a first-round exit the previous year and their first playoff appearance in six seasons, they further built on their hard-nosed identity and remained at the top of the Eastern Conference throughout the season. Detroit finished with a 60-22 record and went 44-38 against the spread this season. The game total also remained under in 44 of their 82 games.

Cade Cunningham battled a collapsed lung at the tail end of the season, but returned for the final three regular-season games. The former number one overall pick leads the Pistons with 23.9 points, 9.9 assists, and 5.5 rebounds on the season. Jalen Duren made an All-Star leap alongside him, posting averages of 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game on the season. Daniss Jenkins has been a breakout impact player this year, while Tobias Harris provides veteran leadership to the youthful roster. Ausar Thompson, Kevin Huerter, Duncan Robinson and Ron Holland also play notable roles.

Detroit is scoring 117.8 points per game this season, which ranks eighth in the NBA. The Pistons also rank 10th in offensive rating, third in field-goal percentage, and 17th in three-point percentage. Defensively, opponents are scoring 109.6 points per game against the Pistons, which ranks third in the league. J.B. Bickerstaff’s squad also ranks second in defensive rating, third in opponent field-goal percentage and first in opponent three-point percentage.

Magic at Pistons prediction, best bet

It has been a wildly impressive season for the Detroit Pistons and largely an underwhelming one for the Orlando Magic. However, the Magic match up fairly well with the conference-leading opponent. Orlando has the toughness and athleticism to match Detroit and will not allow them to dominate the rebounding battle against them the way they do against some teams.

However, the inconsistencies of the Magic are a bit too large a concern to overlook. This was put on full display in the play-in tournament. Orlando fell to the 76ers 109-97, where they led for just 6% of the matchup and struggled in a major way. Orlando then flipped the switch in the second play-in game, blowing out the Hornets 121-90 to keep their season alive. They stretched the lead to as many as 35 and led for 97% of the game.

My lean would be toward Detroit playing at a higher level and covering the 8.5-point spread in the series opener. But I am backing the game total to remain under the 219.5 line.

The biggest concern with each of these teams is that their offensive process can be clunky for stretches. Detroit is extremely dependent on Cunningham to lead the offensive charge and lacks enough other offensive creators. Paolo Banchero carries similar responsibilities for the Magic and has had some notable ups and downs this season. These teams also rank 22nd and 29th in three-point volume.

Both these teams rank in the top 13 in opponents’ points allowed and in the top 11 in defensive rating. Detroit’s defensive unit is especially elite and will have success stopping Orlando’s offensive approach. The pathway to the Magic keeping things competitive is by mucking the game up as much as possible and keeping this a defensive battle. Expect the playoff intensity to only increase the level of defensive effort and for there to be some jitters for the youthful rosters that show up on offense. It will be a difficult ask for either team to comfortably eclipse 100 points and count on the 219.5 game total to be too high.

Best Bet: Game Total Under 219.5 (-110)

Sean Barnard details his preview and prediction for Sunday’s game between the Orlando Magic and the Detroit Pistons.…

[3773
7,296,188,3860,6,297
0":"post-714047","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-detroit-pistons","8":"tag-basketball","9":"tag-detroit","10":"tag-detroit-pistons","11":"tag-detroitpistons","12":"tag-nba","13":"tag-pistons
["GET
