The Oklahoma City Thunder Book Bus made a stop at a Tulsa elementary school Monday, handing out books to young students.<\/p>\n
The visit took place at Patrick Henry Elementary, where kindergarten and first grade students were able to choose their own books to take home.<\/p>\n
\n Building literacy through ownership<\/p>\n
Organizers say the program is designed to promote literacy by giving children books they can keep, rather than borrow.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat ownership of having a book at home that\u2019s theirs \u2014 that they don\u2019t have to return \u2014 is important for building a personal library,\u201d said Macquade Parker, a community engagement outreach coordinator.<\/p>\n
The program typically serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade.<\/p>\n

Summer registration for the Book Bus opens May 1, allowing organizations across Oklahoma to sign up for visits.<\/p>\n
