{"id":716053,"date":"2026-04-22T18:24:39","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T18:24:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/716053\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T18:24:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T18:24:39","slug":"billy-donovans-departure-from-chicago-bulls-could-have-major-college-basketball-implications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/716053\/","title":{"rendered":"Billy Donovan&#8217;s Departure from Chicago Bulls Could Have Major College Basketball Implications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"67\">The biggest fish is officially on the college basketball market. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6a\">Billy Donovan announced his resignation from the Chicago Bulls this week and there could be a ripple effect on the rest of the sport. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6d\">It was clear that North Carolina had interest in the two-time National Champion with the Florida Gators but after he said he would not make a decision on his future until after the Bulls\u2019 season concluded, the Tar Heels could not wait until mid-April and opted to hire former NBA champion Michael Malone to be its head coach. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">But the noise around Donovan will not stop with North Carolina. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">Reports have surfaced that the Golden State Warriors would be interested in Florida head coach Todd Golden if Steve Kerr opts to retire this season. Golden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/cbb-hq\/sec-basketball\/todd-golden-gives-noncommittal-answer-on-golden-state-warriors-rumors-despite-florida-loaded-roster\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">did not give an assertive answer<\/a> when asked about the possibility of leaving the Gators this offseason saying, \u201cI\u2019m definitely planning on coaching the Gators.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">It would be too poetic if Todd Golden leaves for the NBA and Billy Donovan returns to the place in which he coached for 15 years, winning two National Championships, and making four Final Fours. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6p\">Even if the Gators job doesn\u2019t open, there will be several programs that will be keeping an eye on Donovan throughout the season, specifically the Kentucky Wildcats who have been struggling in the transfer portal as its fanbase grows restless with Mark Pope after two seasons despite making the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6s\">Some people around the NBA have also floated the idea that the Chicago Bulls could in interested in Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, a Northbrook, Illinois native, to replace Billy Donovan on the sidelines. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6v\">Regardless, Billy Donovan potentially returning to college basketball within the next two seasons will only make the sport stronger and create more storylines around the country next winter. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.minutemediacdn.com\/platform\/google_discover_icon.svg\" class=\"shrink-0\"\/>Add us as a preferred source on Google<a aria-label=\"Follow si.com on Google News\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=si.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"flex h-[30px] w-[30px] shrink-0 items-center justify-center rounded-full bg-primary font-group-large text-sm font-medium text-white transition-colors hover:bg-secondary focus:bg-secondary md:w-auto md:gap-2.5 md:px-4 md:py-[5px]\">Follow<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The biggest fish is officially on the college basketball market.
