{"id":723813,"date":"2026-05-02T14:21:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T14:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/723813\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T14:21:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T14:21:21","slug":"mark-cuban-was-interested-in-buying-mavericks-back-heres-what-stopped-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/723813\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Cuban was interested in buying Mavericks back \u2014 here&#8217;s what stopped him"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Cuban was interested in getting his team back.<\/p>\n<p>The billionaire sold 73 percent of his stake in the Mavericks to the Adelson family for $3.5 million in December 2023 after 23 years as an owner, only to see the franchise\u2019s fortunes take a turn for the worse in the years that followed \u2013 including the ill-fated trade of superstar Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Dallas, which currently has NBA Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg, still missed the playoffs over the past two seasons, with a combined record of 65-99, after losing in the NBA Finals in 2023-24.\u00a0Injuries to aging stars Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving have been the main culprit. <\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49707602;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39262470\" width=\"883\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/user-expressly-acknowledges-agrees-downloading-125782193.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Cuban giving a thumbs up at an NBA basketball game.\" class=\"wp-image-39262470\"  \/> Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The 67-year-old Cuban, who was outspoken against the Doncic trade, <a href=\"https:\/\/frontofficesports.com\/mark-cuban-mavericks-sale-adelsons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was asked by FrontOffice Sports<\/a> if he was interested in buying back the club and was clear about his willingness to do so and the hurdles that way face.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there was any chance of being able to do that anymore, I would, but that\u2019s just not the game anymore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cuban, who still owns 27 percent of the team, noted that \u201ca bunch of people\u201d contacted him, unhappy with the direction of the franchise.\u00a0 He was willing to do his part to get control of the team back if the Adelsons were interested in selling, but strongly believed that wasn\u2019t a viable scenario.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c I was like, \u2018Look, if you can get them to sell, I would be more than happy to contribute my equity, et cetera, et cetera, and help.\u2019 But I didn\u2019t expect that to materialize,\u201d Cuban said. \u201cI told them I didn\u2019t think it would happen, that I didn\u2019t think the Adelsons had any interest in selling. And they don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39262474\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nba\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2151053458.jpg\" alt=\"Two smiling celebrities attend the Los Angeles Clippers game.\" class=\"wp-image-39262474\"  \/>Mavericks owner Miriam Adelson and Gary Barber attend a basketball game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks at Crypto.com Arena on May 01, 2024 Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Such a proposition could grow even more expensive in the coming years as the Adelsons have the option to buy 20 percent more of the Mavericks from Cuban within four years of ownership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cuban, who saw the Mavericks win the 2011 NBA championship during his stewardship, expressed mixed feelings about the sale itself during an appearance on the \u201cIntersections\u201d podcast in late March.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DWg45CCOERo\/?igsh=aTh4eXFibjY2d3dj\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I don\u2019t regret selling<\/a>,\u201d Cuban said. \u201cI regret who I sold to.
