DETROIT \u2013 Tobias Harris<\/a> said the Detroit Pistons<\/a>\u2019 early defensive intensity and late-game composure set the tone in their Game 1 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers inside Little Caesars Arena<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Harris was one of Detroit\u2019s most impactful players, helping the Pistons build an early 18-point lead and weather a late Cleveland rally. <\/p>\n

He pointed to energy plays, defensive activity, and team-wide execution as the foundation for the win.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust being active all game long,\u201d Harris said. \u201cGetting offensive boards, creating winning plays, extra effort plays, that\u2019s what basketball is about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Defense drives Detroit\u2019s game plan<\/p>\n

The Pistons opened aggressively on both ends, forcing 20 turnovers and converting them into 31 points. <\/p>\n

Harris said that defensive edge was no accident, noting the team\u2019s game plan centered on pressuring Cleveland\u2019s guards and making every possession difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know they\u2019ve got guys who can get buckets,\u201d Harris said. \u201cSo it\u2019s about making every look hard and staying solid within our system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Detroit surged ahead early behind active defense and ball movement, but Cleveland responded with runs that eventually tied the game in the fourth quarter. <\/p>\n

Harris credited the Pistons\u2019 poise for finishing strong down the stretch.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been here before,\u201d Harris said. \u201cIt was just staying composed, understanding the moment, and continuing to play our basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lessons from Round 1<\/p>\n

Harris also emphasized lessons carried over from Detroit\u2019s previous seven-game series, saying the experience helped the team better manage momentum swings and pressure situations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked about not letting that be our team, relaxing after a long series,\u201d Harris said. \u201cWe wanted to come out with urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris added that while the Pistons\u2019 start was strong, there are still areas for improvement, including rebounding and sustaining leads.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe could have done a better job on the glass,\u201d Harris said. \u201cThose are things we\u2019ve got to clean up going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Depth, team effort key factors<\/p>\n

Detroit\u2019s depth played a key role, with contributions from guard Cade Cunningham<\/a>, big man Jalen Duren<\/a>, and former Michigan Wolverines<\/a> sharpshooter Duncan Robinson<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Harris also praised the bench energy that helped shift momentum throughout the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cTotal team effort,\u201d Harris said. \u201cGuys stepped up in different moments.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Pistons\u2019 defense was particularly effective against Cleveland\u2019s backcourt, disrupting rhythm and forcing difficult shots throughout the night. <\/p>\n

Harris said that level of pressure is central to Detroit\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s our system defensively,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to be present, solid, and make everything difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eyes on improvement<\/p>\n

Harris said Detroit\u2019s recent postseason success has come from playing faster, mentally and physically, while still chasing improvement in effort plays and 50-50 balls.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still can be better,\u201d Harris said. \u201cThose winning plays matter in the playoffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Harris said the Cavaliers present a different challenge than Detroit\u2019s first-round opponent, the Orlando Magic, pointing to Cleveland\u2019s offensive versatility and scoring depth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a brand new series,\u201d Harris said. \u201cThey\u2019ve got a lot of scorers. We just have to lock in and be ready for the next test.\u201d<\/p>\n

For now, Harris said the focus remains on consistency.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just have to keep it rolling,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n

The Pistons are gearing up for Game 2, which will tip off on Thursday (May 7), at 7 p.m. on Prime Video.<\/p>\n
