Michael Jordan<\/a>‘s influence during his 1990s dominance with the Chicago Bulls<\/a> was so powerful that his legacy still resonates today. One of the kids captivated by the Air Jordan culture, born and raised right in Chicago, was Dwyane Wade<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Among his peers from Chicago, Wade arguably came closest to emulating what Jordan did on the court, but he also mirrored that ambition off the hardwood during his playing days.<\/p>\n

Modeling much of his game after His Airness, the man known as The Flash was lethal from the mid-range and virtually unstoppable when attacking the rim. As he matured, he began building his off-court legacy in the image of the Jordan Brand, eventually joining forces with the Chinese brand Li-Ning.<\/p>\n

“Definitely, I was able to see how Michael went from being a great player to taking his legacy from what he’s done in basketball and having it live on for so many years. I had an unbelievable opportunity here to try and follow in similar footsteps, but in a different capacity hopefully,” Wade said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I took that opportunity and I’m excited about it. I know it’s going to be a lot of work as well, but it’s a challenge. I look forward to the challenge, but most importantly, I look forward to the opportunity to do what hasn’t been done that often, in a sense. Michael Jordan obviously has done it, but that’s it,” he added.<\/p>\n

Wade’s move was unexpected<\/p>\n

At the time, guys like LeBron James<\/a>, Kobe Bryant<\/a> and later Kevin Durant<\/a> were deep into their projects with Nike, while stars like Carmelo Anthony<\/a> and Russell Westbrook<\/a> chose to align with the Jordan Brand.<\/p>\n

In the public eye, Wade’s move was unexpected; as a Chicago native inspired by Jordan’s heroics, he seemed like the ideal face of the Jordan Brand.<\/p>\n

However, Wade admits that playing alongside Shaquille O’Neal in the Miami Heat<\/a> and his Olympic experience in Beijing shifted his perspective.<\/p>\n

“I wasn’t aware at all. That was kind of the first eye opener into the Li-Ning brand. I wasn’t aware at all and I just knew that it was a China-based company. I knew that Shaq, a lot of times, he was known to do stuff outside of the box,” Wade said.<\/p>\n

“I think I probably became more aware [of the brand] probably in 2008 more so than in 2006 when I played with Shaq. We were at the Beijing Olympics and Mr. Li Ning was the one that ended up flying over the ‘Bird’s Nest’ and ended up lighting the torch. They kind of blew up in 2008 and that moment really made the name known,” he added.<\/p>\n

The momentum began when O’Neal signed a five-year deal with Li-Ning in 2006 to sell footwear and apparel in China. As a cornerstone of Team USA during the 2008 Olympics, Wade fully realized just how global the sport had become across the Pacific.<\/p>\n

This journey reached its off-court peak in 2016, when Li-Ning created a custom masterpiece<\/a>: ‘The Fire Monkey.’ Commemorating the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Monkey, these size 15 sneakers were encrusted with diamonds and sapphires and featured a solid 18k gold tag.<\/p>\n

The brand remains a major player in the league today<\/p>\n

The price? A staggering $4 million. The sneakers were intended for an auction benefitting the organization “Soles4Souls”, though details on the buyer or whether they ever officially entered a private collection were never made public.<\/p>\n

The brand remains a major player in the league today, worn by stars such as Jimmy Butler<\/a>, D’Angelo Russell, Fred VanVleet<\/a> and CJ McCollum<\/a>. The link between the NBA and China continues to grow stronger each year, with new brands emerging and gaining representation from icons like Nikola Jokic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As for Wade, while he may not have reached the stratospheric heights of his idol’s empire, his partnership with Li-Ning played a pivotal role in the league’s global expansion.<\/p>\n
