But according to former Charlotte Hornets president Fred Whitfield, that loyalty went far beyond sponsorships and public appearances, something he got to learn the hard way.

As reported by Fadeaway World, Whitfield recalled a story when Jordan came to Greensboro, North Carolina, to make an appearance at his basketball camp. They went to Whitfield’s apartment because the president wanted to grab a jacket. Whitfield then revealed his huge closet that was split into two sections, with one half filled with his Nike sweatshirts and matching shoes, and the other with Puma gear.

Jordan was not happy with what he had seen. “So he comes out of my closet, and he has all of my Puma sweats in his arm, like he’s hugging them, and he dumps them on the living room floor,” he recalled on “The JustIn Time Podcast.” There, he learned the grave mistake he made – and Jordan made sure he won’t repeat it.

      Jordan’s Loyalty Was Extreme

According to Whitfield, the Nike gear came from trips he took with Michael Jordan to Portland and Beaverton, while the Puma equipment was picked up during a separate visit to the company’s headquarters with Ralph Sampson. However, the Chicago Bulls legend did not care about how he got his Puma gear.

Since Puma was considered a competitor to Nike, Jordan immediately reacted. Whitfield recalled that Jordan grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen and began cutting apart the Puma gear. “He goes back in my closet and gets all the Puma shoes, puts them on the living room floor. He goes into my kitchen and gets a butcher knife, and he just starts cutting all my sweatsuits up and all my sneakers,” he said.

Jordan played 13 seasons with the Bulls, winning six championships, six Finals MVPs and five MVPs, making him one of the perennial candidates for the greatest basketball player of all time. Meanwhile, he helped transform Air Jordan into a global brand after signing with Nike as a rookie in 1984, and even after retirement, the connection between Jordan and the company remained deeply tied to his image and business empire.

For the legendary shooting guard, loyalty is everything, and he expects that from the people around him, hence his reaction. “He said, ‘Hey man, either you’re with me, or you’re not. You can’t ride the fence…Don’t ever let me see you in anything other than Nike,” Whitfield said.

When it comes to Jordan, there are just lines one does not cross. Patronizing rival brands is one of them. With how MJ reacted to Whitfield’s Puma collection, it’s safe to say that the latter learned his lesson. And that was in 1989. And to this day, I’ve never had another pair of sneakers on that weren’t either Nike, Jordan, or Converse.”

Title: Michael Jordan Credit: Image by mccarmona23, CC BY 2.0.
