However beginning with the 2017-18 season, the NBA allowed the home team to choose any uniform. The League also worked with Nike, its apparel provider, to eliminate the “home” and “away” uniform designations altogether during the same season.

Article continues below this ad

The result has been two-fold. Nike’s deal with the NBA allowed them to flood the market with more alternate uniforms and colorways. What’s notable is that the Rockets played six more home games after their 123-122 win over the Heat, but four of them were in their white “Dunkstronaut” alternate uniforms, and two were either in red or black.

Longtime basketball critic Ethan Strauss recognizes that uniform choice is something that will easily rile up his audience.

“If someone asked me what subject results in more reader mail than you might expect, it’s uniforms,” Strauss wrote in his newsletter in 2024, which has nearly 40,000 subscribers. “Many sports fans are sick of leagues trying to revolutionize jerseys and they lack an outlet that’ll listen to this seemingly niche complaint. It’s gotten worse in part because the launching of a new uniform now makes for an instant, easy write-up from media outlets, incentivizing PR-hungry franchises to tinker further.

Article continues below this ad

“I, for one, share this fan frustration. From the MLB to the NBA, to college programs trying to make a splash with garish designs, these institutions seem to reject the basic value proposition of being visually familiar.”

Who matters most in uniform selection?

Being visually familiar is important to many who consume the NBA on television or in person at an arena. However, at least when watching my cousins and nephews’ countless hours on the game, many fans who play NBA 2K, the league’s official simulation video game franchise, choose to wear a team’s alternate or throwback uniforms rather than the traditional ones offered.

The last time the Houston Rockets wore their traditional white uniforms at home was on March 21 against the Miami Heat.

Kenneth Richmond/Getty Images

What does this mean for teams like the Rockets? It’s clear that wearing the traditional home whites isn’t a priority for the organization or Nike, but it’s difficult to determine whether that is good or bad for the franchise. Rumors persist that a new uniform set could be in the works for the Rockets starting in the 2026-27 season, which could motivate the team to wear their home whites more often.

Article continues below this ad

The Rockets did not respond to a request for comment on new uniforms as of Friday.

It’s clear that the push for more uniforms and alternate looks isn’t going away anytime soon, with Nike leading design for the league’s 30 teams, but tradition can still be a thing in today’s sporting world.
