The San Antonio Spurs<\/a> have demonstrated a significant advantage over the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a> in their head to head confrontations. After the Spurs earned a 122-115 double overtime victory over the Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, they have beaten Oklahoma City<\/a> in five of six meetings this season.<\/p>\n

Normally, regular-season dominance is not going to be an indication of how a playoff series between elite teams will play out, but the Spurs have drawn confidence from the way they have performed against the Thunder this season. Much of their success has come from the growth of Victor Wembanyama<\/a>, who has become one of the games most spectacular players.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama finished third in MVP voting this season with Oklahoma City\u2019s Shai Gilgeous Alexander<\/a> winning his second consecutive title while Denver Nuggets<\/a> center Nikola Jokic<\/a> was second.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama appears to be motivated by two things \u2014 winning and improving. He has not been impressed by any of his or his team\u2019s accomplishments to this point. It\u2019s only about the next game.<\/p>\n

That was the case in the first two series against the Portland Trail Blazers<\/a> and Minnesota Timberwolves<\/a>, and it was also the case against the Thunder in Game 1 after his off-the-charts 41-point, 24-rebound<\/a> showing against the Thunder. He refused to take credit for his individual effort, which was reminiscent of the dominance that all-time greats Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar displayed at various points during their careers.<\/p>\n

\u201cA great effort \u2014 from everybody,\u201d said Wembanyama. He added that while a victory in Game 1 on the road was what the Spurs were looking for, they need to accomplish much more in the series and the first game was just one step.<\/p>\n

The Spurs have gotten the Thunder\u2019s full attention and the likely reaction is that Oklahoma City will respond<\/a> with it\u2019s best game here. The idea of the Thunder losing back-to-back home games does not make any sense.<\/p>\n

Oklahoma City had not lost in its eight previous postseason games and they have 38-7 in their home games \u2014 including 4-1 in the playoffs \u2014 this season. The Thunder know that the Spurs are a great team and they did not take them lightly in Game 1, but Gilgeous-Alexander had a rare subpar performance.<\/p>\n

The numbers show that Gilgeous-Alexander had 24 points and 12 assists, but he had a troubling shooting night as he made just 7 of 23 shots. That included 2 of 7 from beyond the arc. He picked it up in the second half, but he was just 1 of 5 from the field in the first half. That display marked the first time in 270 games that Gilgeous-Alexander didn\u2019t have at least two field goals in the first half of any game.<\/p>\n

In addition to a sharper game from the league\u2019s MVP, Chet Holmgren<\/a> has to provide more than 8 points and 8 rebounds. Jalen Williams<\/a> returned from his hamstring issues to score 26 points to lead the team.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama will once again be the focus on both ends of the court for the Spurs, but he is not a one-man team. Dylan Harper<\/a> had 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Stephon Castle<\/a> and Devin Vassell<\/a> had 17 and 13 points, respectively.<\/p>\n

Spurs vs. Thunder Game 2 Prediction and Pick<\/p>\n

The Spurs are not the kind of team that is satisfied because they won the first game on the road and know they will leave Oklahoma City with a split. Head coach Mitch Johnson\u2019s team was relentless in the first-round series on the road against the Trail Blazers by winning both road games by significant margins, and they were 2-1 on the road in their second-round victory over the Timberwolves.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama brings an attitude that demonstrates his hunger to win at all costs. He is a hungry player in addition to being a dominant physical force.<\/p>\n

The Thunder knows the Spurs will not be intimidated. However, Oklahoma City head coach Mark Daigneault knows his team has to be much better and it would be a shocker if they lost this game. Gilgeous-Alexander will get off to a much better start in Game 2.<\/p>\n

The Spurs will keep it close for three quarters, but the fourth quarter belongs to the Thunder and Oklahoma City squares the series.<\/p>\n
