The Dallas Mavericks<\/a>\u2019 decision to move on from Jason Kidd immediately sent shockwaves across the NBA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kidd had taken Dallas to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2024. He was a franchise icon, a Hall of Fame point guard, and still had four years and more than $40 million left on his contract, according to ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But new Mavericks president Masai Ujiri wasted little time reshaping the organization, ending Kidd\u2019s five-year run after a turbulent 2025-26 campaign that saw Dallas finish 26-56 despite landing Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now the coaching search has taken an interesting turn.<\/p>\n

According to NBA insider Brett Siegel, Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, who coached Flagg in college, is expected to receive interest from Dallas, alongside other reported candidates such as Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney.<\/p>\n

Flagg\u2019s lone season at Duke further cemented the Blue Devils coach as one of the sport\u2019s fastest-rising program builders.<\/p>\n

Under Scheyer, Flagg averaged\u00a019.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks, led Duke in all five major statistical categories, and powered the Blue Devils to a\u00a0Final Four run and No. 1 seed.<\/p>\n

He won the\u00a0Naismith Award, AP National Player of the Year, and National Freshman of the Year honors, becoming one of the rare freshmen to own college basketball<\/a> from opening night through March.<\/p>\n

Scheyer essentially handed him the keys to a modern, positionless offense and let his versatility take over.<\/p>\n

If Dallas truly intends to build its future around Flagg, as Ujiri has emphasized<\/a>, hiring the coach who already understands how to maximize the phenom\u2019s game is the best way to do it.<\/p>\n

Scheyer, 38, inherited one of the biggest brands in college basketball when he replaced Mike Krzyzewski at Duke in 2022. Yet, rather than collapsing under pressure, he stacked results quickly.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s already secured three ACC tournament titles, two regular-season conference titles, ACC and NABC Coach of the Year honors in 2026, and a Final Four appearance with Flagg in 2025.<\/p>\n

After the Luka Doncic<\/a> drama, front-office upheaval, and back-to-back losing seasons, the Mavericks need more than just X\u2019s and O\u2019s. They need a stabilizing presence around their 19-year-old franchise cornerstone.<\/p>\n

Of course, the risks are real.<\/p>\n

College dominance does not automatically translate to the NBA. Managing veterans, navigating locker-room politics, and coaching multimillion-dollar superstars is a much different challenge than recruiting high school kids to Durham.<\/p>\n
