The Miami Heat<\/a> have reportedly made a trade offer to the Milwaukee Bucks<\/a> to bring superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a> to South Beach.<\/p>\n

According to veteran NBA reporter Gery Woelfel<\/a>, the Heat have made a trade offer to the Bucks for Antetokounmpo that includes Tyler Herro<\/a>, Jaime Jaquez Jr.<\/a>, Kel’el Ware<\/a>, the 13th overall pick in this year’s NBA draft, and two future first-round picks.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen if the Bucks will accept this offer, but it’s a strong offer, and one that Woelfel says makes the Heat the “odds-on favorite to land Antetokounmpo in a trade.”<\/p>\n

Why the Heat Should Do It<\/p>\n

The Heat should do this trade because it would land them Antetokounmpo, who is one of the top-five best players in the NBA. In this league, you need superstars if you want to win an NBA Championship. The Heat do not have a superstar right now, and arguably haven’t had one since LeBron James<\/a> left town years ago, though Jimmy Butler III<\/a> was close. So, after missing the playoffs this past season, it makes total sense why the Heat would want to make a big splash and acquire Antetokounmpo, who is, by far, the best available player on the trade market.<\/p>\n

Although he only played in 36 games this year due to injury, Antetokounmpo still averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists for the Bucks. But the Bucks missed the playoffs, and former head coach Doc Rivers stepped away, leading to the team hiring Taylor Jenkins instead. Antetokounmpo may not want to start over with a new coach on what appears to be a non-competitive team, so it makes sense that the Bucks trade him, and this offer from the Heat is a very strong one.<\/p>\n

Yes, the Heat would be losing several key players, including Herro, who is one of the top 3-point shooters in the NBA, Jaquez, who is a fantastic sixth man, and Ware, a big man with upside. Plus, they would have to give up three first-round picks in the trade. But the chance to acquire someone of Antetokounmpo’s caliber is too much to pass on, so it makes total sense why Heat president Pat Riley would sign off on the Heat trading this package of picks and players to acquire him.<\/p>\n

Why the Bucks Should Do It<\/p>\n

For the Bucks, they only have one more guaranteed season of Antetokounmpo, who makes $58.5 million next year. He has a player option for the season after that at $62.7 million, but he will decline that option and sign a maximum value contract extension, either with the Bucks if he stays there, or with the Heat or another team if he does get traded, as expected. With no guarantee Antetokounmpo stays past this upcoming season, it makes sense for the Bucks to trade him and get trade value back instead of losing him for nothing.<\/p>\n

The Bucks just had a terrible season where they went 32-50 and missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade. That led to Rivers parting ways with the club, and the team is now expected to make several big roster moves this offseason to help retool the club. Trading Antetokounmpo, who has far and away the most trade value of any player on the team, is the obvious move for Milwaukee, even though it might be hard for fans to initially understand why their club traded its franchise player.<\/p>\n

Truthfully, the Bucks are not a contender in the Eastern Conference, even if they have Antetokounmpo on the roster, so it makes sense for all parties to move on. The opportunity to get three solid rotation players in Herro, Jaquez, and Ware, plus three first-round picks, is likely too good an offer to pass up. The Bucks may keep holding out for more, and there may be another team out there that sends them a better offer. But knowing how good an offer the Heat have put out there for Antetokounmpo, it seems like his days in a Bucks uniform are numbered, and the Heat seem like a likely landing spot.<\/p>\n
