The Detroit Pistons<\/a> are surely looking for some upgrades this offseason after the way their playoff run ended.<\/p>\n

To find one, they may have to snag a talented free agent from the Charlotte Hornets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Coby White<\/a> is heading for the open market, and someone will pay him quite solidly to be a dangerous scorer and shooter for their offense.<\/p>\n

Detroit could use the firepower, but Charlotte will have a chance to keep White, too.<\/p>\n

ESPN’s Bobby Marks, in a new article on Friday<\/a>, listed the two Eastern Conference teams as his “best fits” for White.<\/p>\n

Marks projects a three-year, $54 million deal for White and then analyzes mostly why it’d make sense for Charlotte to keep him.<\/p>\n

“The Hornets started free agency early when they acquired White at the February trade deadline,” Marks writes. “They inherited his Bird rights, allowing them to sign him as a free agent and exceed the salary cap. Without the trade, Charlotte did not have cap space to sign the guard outright.\u00a0In 21 games off the bench after the trade, White averaged 15.6 points and shot 39.1% on 3-pointers.”<\/p>\n

Marks doesn’t specifically break down the Pistons, but it was clear in their rougher moments against the Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a> in the playoffs that they simply needed more guys who could make plays with the basketball beyond Cade Cunningham<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Detroit has some interesting young talent, but a scorer like White would add a dimension that the Pistons simply didn’t have.<\/p>\n

White could also like the idea of going to a team that was just the Eastern Conference’s top seed. Winning has appeal to some, but the Hornets are on the rise, too.<\/p>\n

There aren’t a ton of big-name free agent guards this offseason, so White’s decision will feel like a key one.<\/p>\n
