God Shammgod, who famously helped 10th-seeded Providence reach the Elite Eight during the 1997 NCAA tournament and introduced \u201cThe Shammgod\u201d \u2014 a streetball-esque crossover move \u2014 to the basketball world<\/a>, will reportedly continue his NBA coaching career in New Orleans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shammgod spent the 2025-26 season as an assistant under Jamahl Mosley with the Orlando Magic<\/a>, and he\u2019s now joining Mosley\u2019s Pelicans<\/a> staff, according to NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.<\/a><\/p>\n

Orlando fired Mosley after the Magic blew a 3-1 lead in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs<\/a> to the Detroit Pistons<\/a>. But it wasn\u2019t long before he got a chance to rebuild another franchise, as New Orleans brought him aboard as its head coach this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Magic won just 22 games in Mosley\u2019s first season at the helm. Each of his last three seasons running the ship, Orlando won at least 41 games. It hadn\u2019t had a stretch like that since it piled up 50-plus victories four seasons in a row under Stan Van Gundy from 2007-11. Unfortunately for Mosley, his Magic teams couldn\u2019t get over the first-round hump in the playoffs.<\/p>\n

He\u2019ll have an opportunity to take the Pelicans further, and, per Scotto, Shammgod will be on his bench again.<\/p>\n

Shammgod, 50, never carved out much of an NBA career \u2014 he played only 20 games in the league, all for the Washington Wizards<\/a> amid the 1997-98 season \u2014 but his influence on the game is clear.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s revered for his handles, and \u201cThe Shammgod\u201d has become one of the most jaw-dropping moves on the hardwood<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Future Basketball Hall of Famer Chris Paul<\/a>, long an admirer of Shammgod<\/a>, notably had the move in his bag:<\/p>\n

Before Mosley hired Shammgod to his Magic staff last summer, Shammgod spent 2016-25 as a player development coach for the Dallas Mavericks. In addition to helping players hone their craft, he served as a defensive assistant.<\/p>\n

His coaching career began at his alma mater. At Providence, he also served as a player development coach from 2012-15.<\/p>\n

Shammgod is best known for yo-yoing the ball around the court and blending his streetball background with impressive fundamentals.
